The compromise happened when slave states wanted to count the slaves as their population count so they could become ꜛ and have more reps. The free states thought this was terrible and should not happen because they don't treat slaves like humans, they treat them like property so they should not count towards population but towards taxation. They decided that 3 out of 5 slaves should be counted towards the population. This was sectionalism because the slave states wanted to grow their own state. -
The South states felt like the federal government was becoming too powerful and they thought that their way of life was becoming threatened by the government passing and freeing slaves. Missouri compromise started when the federal government was deciding if they were going to admit Missouri to the United States. Admitting Missouri would make there be more slave supporting states than free states. To settle the argument the government made the 36º 30 North line. This freed four million slaves in the United Sates and made sure that the military and police would not harm any black people for no reason.
