Westward Expansion is the time period where the United States expanded and conquered land to add to the United States. Additionally 4 separate pieces of land were gained and added to the United States. Many monumental events & movements took place during this time some examples include, the 3/5th Compromise, the Compromise of 1820/MS Compromise, the Compromise of 1850, States Rights, and etc. The westward expansion supported nationalism because it helped all of the United States.

The 3/5 compromise was created at the Constitutional Convention of 1787 because of the southern states large population. The southern states wanted their representatives increased to include their slave population, but the northern states disagreed and argued that slaves are considered property not people. The agreement made was that 3/5ths of the population would count towards population and taxation. This compromise supports sectionalism because it helps individual groups in certain ways. -
Before the Civil War the southern States had the idea that all of the most important affairs should be under the control of the state that is enduring the problem. This idea supported sectionalism because it gives all the states their own powers making them break up more. -
When Missouri was being added to the Union it wanted to be added as a slave state. Adding Missouri as a slave state would give slave states the upper hand in the senate. To fix the problem Massachusetts split & made up Maine evening the senate. This event supported nationalism because it helped all of the nation. -
Harriet Tubman was a slave working at a plantation in Maryland. Tubman escaped slavery in 1849 and instead of enjoying her freedom she decided to save others. Harriet went back to Maryland using what was called the underground railroads. Harriet made 13 successful trips and saved over 65 people. This supports sectionalism because it helps the slave population. -
The Compromise of 1850 was created after the landed gained from 1845-1848. The compromise was comprised of 4 parts: 1) California is admitted as a free state, 2)Popular sovereignty in Utah and New Mexico, 3) Fugitive slave law is passed, 4) D.C. bans the Slave trade, and 5) Texas receives 10 million dollars and creates border. This event supported both sectionalism and nationalism because some things helped the nation like the addition of California and others only supported sections like Texas. -
The Fugitive slave law was created during the compromise of 1850 after many slaves escaped to free states. The law required the people of the United States to return slaves back to their owners even if the slaves were in free states. This law supports sectionalism because it only supports the southern states and it doesn't help or really effect the free states at all. -
After Abraham Lincoln was elected as president South Carolina felt like slavery was in danger and called a state convention. South Carolina was removed from the union and soon 6 more states followed in the footsteps of South Carolina and left the union. The secession of southern states majorly supported sectionalism due to all of those states leaving for a cause only supported in the south. -
The Emancipation Proclamation was created by Abraham Lincoln. The proclamation freed all slaves and let them be free. It was created after the southern states seceded from the Union. The proclamation did not end slavery but it did introduce the idea of cutting out slavery from the American lives. The emancipation proclamation supported nationalism by trying to bring the nation back together by making a big change that had not been expected.
