This all started when John Brown and his sons attacked and murdered 5 pro-slavery men. The fighting continued also. Buildings were burned, and armies were formed on each side. This divided the nation and pointed toward the Civill War.

Dred Scott was a slave in two free states then moved to Louisiana and became a free man. He moved to Missouri after than and they took him into slavery again. They did this because he was not white so he was not considered a citezen of the U.S., therefore the supreme court ruled that he could not sue in the courts.

Lincoln was Nominated to run for senate by the Illinois legislature. The key issue was slavery, and some have called them value debates because they were about morals, human rights, and philosophy.

During this attack on Harpers Ferry Brown seized the arsenal and tried to give the blacks weapons, but his attack failed because after 36 hours each of his men had either fled, or gotten killed. Brown was hung after this and the Northerners praised him. The southerners were scared that someone else would attempt this also.

There were four cantidates, Lincoln, Douglas, Bell, and Breakenridge. The four way election eventually split into two totally different elections. Lincoln and Douglas for the North, and Bell and Breakinridge for the South. Lincoln won in the North and Breakenridge won in the South.
