As Ishmael heads to a talent show with a group of friends, he is noticed that a group of rebels invaded his village. After they hear of this, they try heading back to find their families. They run into rebels, and run into hiding. As they hid, they saw people being slaughtered with AK47s.

A group of young military officers, led by Captain Valentine Strasser, launches a military coup that sends Momah into exile.They established the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) as the ruling authority in Sierra Leone. The NPRC proves to be nearly as ineddectual as the Momoh government at repelling the RUFF. More and more of the counrty falls into the hands of the RUF.

A month has passed after the encounter, and the boys have now become savages. They kill other boys they see with their AK47s and high five each other while they sit on the dead bodies.

Ishmael and his friends find a house, but have to cross a clearing. As they cross, someone makes too much noise and alerts the rebels. Ishmael watches his brother pretend to be dead so the rebels don't shoot. They later rob the house of its food.

As the boys became more hungry, they decide to go back to Mattru Jong (their home village) eventhough they know it is unsafe. The are captured by rebel soldiers and put in gunpoint. The rebels torture an older man and the boys are forced to laugh along. Ishmael finds it shocking because before the war, no one of his age would dare disrespect an elder in this sort of way.

As Ishmael and his friends reach their village, they are now captured by guards of the village. The chief sees them and believes that they are part of the rebels. The guards find a cassette tape in Ishmael's pocket and ask what it is. Ishmael explains about the rap group and the talent show. The chief then tells Ismael to perform for them and so he does. Because of this performance, the chief notices that the boys are no threat and let them be.

Soon the village is attacked and the boys escape, but Ishmael loses his group and brother forever. Ishmael finds Kalako. They return to the village to find everything burned down. They later find a family and stay with them for a couple of weeks. Ishmael could not handle this, so he leaves them and is now all by himself.

After a long time by himself, Ishmael meets new friends. Him and his new friends help each other survive just like his last. They decide to help stay with the group and kill the rebels.

Like other soldiers, Ishmael begins to rely on drugs. He begins smoking marijuana and taking white energy pills

One day the boys decide to break glass and cut themselves. Going to the hospital, Ishmael thinks that he'll be able to sleep a first-aid kit and treat himself. Instead, he is kept for the drug use.

The RUF holds much of the countryside and are on the doorstep of freetown. To control the situation, the NPRC hires several hundred mercenaries from private firms. Within a month, they have driven the RUF fighters back to Sierra Leones's borders.
