Attack at School
While Salva is at school his village is attacked by rebels. His teacher tells him and his classmates to go outside, and run behind the bush. He ends up grouping up with people from his village. -
Salva and the Woman
After staying the night with the group Salva travels with, he is left behind in a Barn. Salva assumes this is because he is a child. After thinking it over he looks outside the barn and sees a woman, she lets him stay there and Salva works hard so he will not be a burden. -
The New Group
The woman can no longer take care of Salva, but she does find a group he can travel with. Although they are reluctant to take him in, Salva begins traveling with them. In the group he meets 2 friends, Buksa and Marial. -
Uncle
While walking with Salva's new friend, Marial, he sees a familiar face, Uncle. His Uncle helps him with many things, getting food, getting along with the group, and the death of his friend, Marial. -
The Nile and the Desert
Depressed by Marials death, the group continues on the journey to Ethiopia. They build several rafts to get across the Nile, and although the journey is hard they make it across to the Akobo Desert. Salva struggles to make it through, but the worst thing to happen to him was Uncles death. Salva becomes more determined to keep going, and at last makes it to the refugee camp. -
The Refugee Camp
Salva has spent 6 years at the refugee camp in Ethiopia and everyone is forced to go to leave. Salva becomes leader of a group and they walk until they get to another refugee camp in Kenya, a year and a half later. -
America
There is news of people going to America, and Salva gets chosen. He is chosen to go to Rochester, New York. On his was there he is very nervous, but he meets his new family, Chris, Louise, and four children. He learns how to read, write, and learns to get used to America. -
Father
Salva learns that his father is alive and ill, so he makes plans to visit him. It takes months but he is able to visit him, and also learns that most of his family is alive, but two of his siblings died. His father had gotten sick because of dirty water. -
The Idea
After returning home Salva wants to think of a way to help his family in southern Sudan. He says this plan is probably out of his league, but continues to work towards it. Along the way he finds many people support his idea, and after many years is able to fulfill it. -
Water
Salva's Idea was installing water wells for many different villages so that they don't have to drink dirty water, and instead can finally drink clean clear water. A little girl comes up to him and says thank you.
