    Early 1985
    Salva is at school when rebels come to the village and start shooting.
    He runs into the bush and finds a group. Among the group is his Uncle.

  • Later in 1985

    Later in 1985
    Salva's group crosses the Nile River.
    In the Akobo desert, Uncle is killed by robbers.
    Salva spends 6 years living in a refugee camp.

  • 1991

    1991
    The refugee camp where Salva has been living in Ethiopia closes.
    He has to cross the Gilo river with the other boys to a refugee camp in Kenya.

  • 1992-1996

    1992-1996
    Salva goes to a different refugee camp in Kenya. He learns some English here. Then he gets chosen to go to America. He flies from Kenya to Germany to New York City and then to Rochester, New York

  • 2003-2007

    2003-2007
    Salva is living with a new family in New York when he gets the news that his father is alive but very sick from contaminated water.
    Salva returns to Sudan to visit his father and decides to work on a project that would give Sudan clean water.

  • 2009

    2009
    Nya moves to Big Lake for clean water.
    The clean water project starts and Nya is able to go to school instead of walking for water every day.
    Nya and Salva meet.
