    The University of North Carolina defeats Trinity College 36 - 25 in the first basketball game between the schools. Trinity College was renamed Duke University after James B. Duke established a $40 million endowment for the school.

    UNC finishes 1923-24 season 26-0
    The 1923-24 UNC team, led by Jack Cobb and Cartwright Carmichael, wins the Southern Conference touranment defetainf Alabama 26-18. Two of the wins come over Duke. Carolina is declared the 1924 National Champions in 1936 by the Helms Sports Foundation as the only undefeated team in the country that year.

    Duke defeats the White Phantoms 36-20 to end an eight year, 16 game UNC winning streak. The Carolina basketball team was referred to as the White Phantoms through the 1949 season.

    Duke tops UNC for SoCon title
    The 1934 Carolina team finishes18-4, being upset by Duke in the Southern Conference tournament after beating the Blue Devils twice in the regular season. Dave McCachren was the captain of that Carolina squad and was the first of four McCachren brothers to play at UNC from 1931-43. The picture is Jim McCachren at age 95. He was a longtime coach at the University of Florida.

    Duke beats defending Southern Conference champions 33-30 in overtime in their first 1936 contest. This will be the last time UNC loses as the White Phantoms win the rematch 30-28, then take their second consecutive Southern Conference tournament title. Carolina goes on to win 5 of the next 7 games to conclude the 1930's.

    Duke dedicates a new indoor arena; UNC wins SoCon
    Duke Indoor Stadium is dedicated. Costing $400,000, it is one of the largest gymnasiums in the country, and will be renamed for 1930's Duke coack Eddie Cameron in 1972. UNC beats Duke at its new arena, and again in the Southern Conference tourney.

    Duke beats UNC 38-37 in the Southern Conference tournament. UNC's George Glamack, nicknamed the Blind Bomber because of his poor eyesight and accurate hook shot, is named National Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.

    The war era wreaks havoc on the ability of schools to have consistent rosters and schedules. UNC loses twice to Duke in 1942. UNC's 1943 team misses the Southern Conference tournament for the first time. Ben Carnevale is hired as coach in 1944.

    UNC had to turn down NIT and NCAA bids in 1945 due to war time travel restrictions. In 1946, the White Phantoms were led by Bones McKinney to the NCAA title game losing to legendary Hank Iba's Oklahoma State team 43-40. Duke manages a season split with Carolina, and is led by Ed Koffenberger, a stand-out basketball and lacrosse player.

    Frank McGuire arrives in Chapel Hill; UNC wins 1957 NCAA title
    The 1957 Heels In 1953, North Carolina becomes a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference and hires Frank McGuire away from St. John's University. The Tar Heels, as they are now known, win their first NCAA Championship in 1957, led that year by Lennie Rosenbluth and several other transplants recruited by McGuire from the New York City area.

    Bubas' first Duke team finishes 7-7 in the ACC in the regular season, getting blown out twice by Wake Forest and three times North Carolina, the league's best teams. Duke beats UNC and Wake in the tournament to capture its first ACC title.

    Duke defeats North Carolina 87-86 in triple overtime When Duke All-American center Mike Lewis picks up his third foul in the first half, Duke coach Vic Bubas subs little used Fred Lind against UNC's 6-11 star Rusty Clark. Lind scores 16 points and carried off on the shoulders of students after the game.

    The rally Duke leads Carolina by 86–78 with 17 seconds left. The Heels rally with a pair of free throws by Bobby Jones, then baskets by John Kuester and Jones after a steal by Walter Davis . Duke's Pete Kramer misses the front end of a one-and-one, Carolina ties the score on Walter Davis's 30 foot shot. Carolina wins 96-92 in OT.

    Gene Banks makes a big shot Duke struggles in its first season under Coach Mike Krzyzewski, going 17–13 overall and 6–8 in the ACC. However, on Senior Night, Duke's Gene Banks puts on a tuxedo, throws roses to the crowd at Cameron Indoor Stadium before the game, and leads Duke to an OT win 66-65.

    Carolina defeats Duke 77-74 in the ACC Tournament to secure the Heels' first ACC title in seven seasons. The teams split the two regular season meetings, Carolina defeating top ranked and then undefeated Duke 91-71 in Cameron in January, a game notable for the infamous "J.R. Can't Reid" placard displayed by some Duke fans. Reid outplays Duke's Danny Ferry in a game with 49 fouls called between the two teams.

    Carolina wins a rough game 75-73. UNC’s Eric Montross hits two free throws down the stretch with blood streaming down his face. Duke’s Bobby Hurley breaks his foot during the game, but continues playing. Duke will go on to beat UNC the next two games and win the National Championship.

    Brendan Haywood, shooting 48 percent from the line, makes a pair of free throws with 1.2 seconds left and the Tar Heels beat the Blue Devils 85-83 in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

    On Senior Day in Chapel Hill, before the largest crowd to see a college game on-campus in the state of NC (22,125), Roy Williams' Tar Heels trail Duke 73-64 with three minutes to play. Offensive rebounds and subsequent put backs trim the lead to 73-71 with 1:45 to go. Raymond Felton nails a the first of two free throws to cut the lead to one, but misses the second one. However, Felton tips the rebound to Marvin Williams, who scores and draws a foul. The made free throw gives UNC a 75-73 win.

    Tyler's fury UNC beats Duke at the Dean Smith Center 86-72, completing the season sweep of the Blue Devils. The most memorable part of this game is Henderson's fouling Tyler Hansbrough’s 14.5 seconds on the clock and the result of the game clearly determined. The contact breaks Hansbrough's nose, drawing blood. Oh yeah, UNC 86 - Duke 72.

    Duke wins; Ramses dies the next day
    UNC leads by 10 points with 2:09 remaining when Duke's Tyler Thornton hits a 3 point shot quickly followed by another 3 point shot by Seth Curry to close the margin to 4. With just 14 seconds left in the game, Tyler Zeller accidentally tips the ball into the Duke basket leaving Carolina with a 1 point lead. After a missed free throw by Zeller, Duke's Austin Rivers hits a 3 point shot at the buzzer to give Duke a 85-84 win. Ramses, the Tar Heels' mascot, is found dead by its owner the next day.
