The story starts off with Marley, Scrooge's partner, being dead. Scrooge has to pay for his coffin and is not pleased. The man who made the coffin tells Scrooge that he needs to pay 2 shillings for it. Back in this time, they would put 2 shillings on the 2 eyes of the deceased. Since Scrooge is so cheap and greedy, he gives the man 2 of his shillings and then takes the 2 shillings off Marley's eyes.

7 years later that very day the story returns seeing Scrooge in his office doing his work. Scrooge has his clerk: Bob Cratchit and two men come in the door looking for Scrooge.
