By 1917 much of America already lived in areas that banned alcohol. People, mainly women, believed alcohol was bad and shouldn't be allowed. They said it caused men to become abusive and it caused liver disease. Congress passed the Eighteenth Amendment in 1919, which made manufacturing and selling of alcohol illegal.

lbert Fall was the Secretary of Interior at the time of the Teapot Dome Scandal. Fall got hold of oil in Elk Hills, California and Teapot Dome, Wyoming. He then took bribes from private oilmen and let them have the oil instead of using it as emergency oil stock for the navy as it was supposed to be. In 1924 the scandal was revealed and Fall went to prison.

Calvin Coolidge was the United States's Vice President when President Harding passed away from a heart attack. Coolidge's father, a Justice of the Peace, immediately swore him in as President of the United States.

Charles Lindbergh was the first pilot to fly non-stop and alone across the Atlantic Ocean in a single-engined plane. He took of from Long Island, New York and headed to Paris, France. The flight would take over 33 hours.

When Lindbergh landed he said, "Well, I made it." He was instantly famous when he reached Paris. He became a large news story and recieved the nicknames, "Lucky Lindy" and "Lone Eagle".

Herbet Hoover was a Republican candidate. He ran against Alfred E. Smith but had no competition. He easily beat Smith by promising the people he would end U.S. poverty and keep the "roaring twenties" going.

People began to buy stock using loans so that they could make a quick profit. However, this increased stock prices significantly and caused to stock market to start to crash. People began to sell their stock to get their money. The day that the stock market finally crashed and billions of dollars were lost became known as Black Tuesday.

The CCC was created by President Roosevelt. It provided jobs for over 2 million men. It was part of Roosevelt's New Deal plan and helped to crate better living conditions and job opportunities.

The Tennessee River Valley was a very unwealthy place. Not many people had essential items such as electricity and running water. Congress created the Tennessee Valley Authority to build dams, plant trees, create jobs so that the unemployement rate would decrease and more.

Banks were in serious need of help after the Great Depression. The FDIC was an act that insured bank deposits up to five thousand dollars and it helped restored people's confidance in banks. They no longer feared they'd lose their life's savings.

People called bootleggers illegally sold alcohol to any and all who were willing to buy it. Prohibition increased the rate of organized crime because people still wanted to drink and would find a way to do so. In 1933 the Twenty-first Amendment made drinking legal again.
