    Final event that triggered the South's decision to leave the union. Northern Democrats nominated Stephen Douglas as their Presidential candidate and southern Democrats nominated John C. Brekinridge. The Republican party nominated Abraham Lincoln, South warned that if Lincoln won they would seceed. Predictably Lincoln won and in December 1860 the secessions began.

    Due to southern Secession Fort sumter in th e harbor of Charleston south carolina was cut off from vital supplies and reinforcements by southern control of the harbor.. Lincoln gave South Carolina the option of letting him send provisions of food or opening fire with its shore batteries. On April 12, 1861 the south opened fire, causing the start on the civil war and United most northerners behind a patriotic fight to save the union.
