Early scientists

  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek

    Anton van Leeuwenhoek
Anton van Leeuwenhoek was unlikley scientist. He made some of the most important discoveries in biology. He discovered bacteria, protist, sperms cells. blood cells, microscopic nematodes and rotifers, and made simple microscopes. He worked around 1660's.
  • Robert Hooke

    Robert Hooke
Robert Hooke discovered plant cells. To be more percise he saw the cell walls and cork tissues. Robert Hooke actually 'coined' the term cells. He did most of his cell discovery work around 1678. (the date we used was his birthday)
  • Jan Swammerdam

    Jan Swammerdam
Jan was a Dutch biologist and microscopist. He mainly worked on insects and phases of the insect. Like larva, eggs, and pupa. In 1668 he was the first to observe red blood cells. He was also one of the first people to use the microscpe in dissections.
  • Felice Fontana

    Felice Fontana
Felice was an Italian physicist who discovered the water gas shift reaction in 1780. He was also rewarded with launching modern toxicology and investigating the human eye. He also published a treaty on carbon dioxide.
  • Robert Brown

    Robert Brown
Robert was a Scottish botanist, who made important contributions through the study and use of the microscope. He discovered the cell nucleus, cytoplasmic streaming, and did early work on the plant pollination and fertilization. He also veiwed Australian in plant species. He also helped discover the cell theory. He worked in the early 1800's and 1830's.
  • Felix Dujardin

    Felix Dujardin
Felix was a French Biologist born in Tours. HE researched protozn=ans and invertabrates. In 1840 he was appointed professor of geology and mineralogy at the University of Toulouse. Later on, he was a professor of zoology and botany at Rennes. He self-taught himself almost all of his eduaction.
  • Theodor Schwann

    Theodor Schwann
Theodor was a German physiologist who made contributions to biology. He was part of the discovery of the cell theory, and the discovery of Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system. He also studied pepsin and he invented the term: metabolism. He worked around 1837ish.
  • Rudolph Virchow

    Rudolph Virchow
Rudolph Virchow's greatest accompolishment was observing that a whole organism does not get sick, only certian cell/groups of cells do. He discovered the practice of medicine. He did his cell work around 1855

  • Matthias Schleiden

    Matthias Schleiden
Matthias was a German botanist who was part of the pair that discovered the cell theory. The cell theory states that the different parts of the plant organisms are composed of cells. (part of theory) Theodor Schwann came up with the theory too. He also discovered the importance of the cell nucleus. He discovered it in 1838.
  • Lynn Margulis

    Lynn Margulis
Lynn was an American Biologist. She wrote a paper, The Origin Of Mitosing Eukaryotic Cells. After being rejected 15 times, it was accepted by The Journal of Theoretical Biology, and is considered a landmark in modern endosymbiotic theory.
Lynn published her writing around 1966.
