In 1819 Missouri, a slave state, wanted to join the Union. But it was 11 free states and 11 slave states. Then Maine, a free state, joined. It kept peace for 30 years. An invisible line was made, with half as free states and the other half were slave states.

Black people weren't thought of as people, so they put them to work without any reward. They were whipped and sometimes died from lack of food or water. Abraham Lincoln tried and succeded to stop slavery.

Nat Turner had visions that became more and more violent, he thought that the messages were from God. Nat went plantation to plantation killing as many white people as he could, 57 white people were killed, mostly children. When it was finally over 100 black people were killed. Some black people that were killed had done nothing wrong. Turner was found hiding in a swamp and then was hanged.

Calforina wanted to join the Union as a free state, but that would mean more free tsates then slave states. The South was not happy. Henry Clay proposed the Comprimise of 1850. One state joined as a free state and in return, the north helped capture fugitive slaves.

Dred was a slave in a free state. He ended up going to the Supreme Court to fight for his freedom. Sadly, he lost because slavse can't claim freedom. This case was one of the most famous cases ever.

Abraham Lincoln was elected, even though he wasn't listed on the ballots of nine southern states. John C. Breckinridge won almost every southern state, except Virginia and Tennessee. However, every northern state elected Abarham Lincoln.

The South was not happy about the election of Abraham Lincoln and the end of slavery . They did not want slavery to end because ther economy would crash. Lots of states left the Federal Union. The South elected their own president, Jefferson Davis.
