  • Battle of Vincennes

    British forces marched to retake the fort at Vincennes from the American troops which had captured it in the spring. More than 500 of these troops were Native Americans. The troops didn't reach the fort and retake it until February 1779.
  • Battle of Savannah and Charlestown

    British troops from New York who were supported by the Royal navy seized Savannah, Georgia from the Americans who were protecting it. In May 1778, these same forces took Charlestown, North Carolina.
  • Battle of King's Mountain/Cowpens

    2400 British troops defeat the Patriot troops in Camden, South Carolina. Lord Cornwallis begins a campaign to invade North Carolina. This battle took place on the Carolina border in October, 1780. The patriots ended up defeating an army made completely of Loyalists. Later, in 1781, the battle of Cowpens also took place in this area.
  • Battle of Guilford Court House

    Cornwallis stops his progress to be resupplied by sea at a port in Wilmington, North Carolina. He then marched into Virginia. Patriots were also reinforced, and they were both left at the coast. The Marquis de Lafayette positioned his troops so that and escape over land was impossible for Cornwallis.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    After hearing about the Marquis' situation with the british, Washington decided to move his army southward to aid them. The French fleet set up a blockade off of the Virginia coast, so escape was impossible by land or sea. This fleet, drove off the British navy in early september. When Washington's troops arrived, the Battle of Yorktown began. Cornwallis found victory was impossible, and surrendered on October 19. 1781.
