A story of the continuous struggle of Nicholas Nickelby to find his fortune. -
The Old Curiosity Shop
"Little Nell" is raised by her grandfather, who runs an antique shop. He borrows large amounts of money from a 'Money Lender' but no one knows where the money goes once he gets it. Eventually it is found out that Nell's grandfather is using the money for gambling, but he is doing so only to be able to win a fortune to secure her future. The Money Lender finds out, takes the shop away, and the two are forced to leave London. "Little Nell" has to take care of her grandfather now. -

Martin Chuzzlewit
Tells of the life and coming of age of Martin Chuzzlewit. After confessing his love for Mary, the girl under his grandfather's care, without asking for his permission, he flees to America with his friend Mark Tapley to search for his fortune. While he's gone, another relative tries to gain Mary. Around this time though, Martin gets sick and is forced to return home, eventually leading to his marriage to Mary being approved. -
A Christmas Carol
A cold-hearted man named Ebenezer Scrooge refuses to find any joy in Christmas or anything else in life. After being visited during the night by the Ghost of Christmas Present, the Ghost of Christmas Past, and the Ghost of Christmas Future, Scrooge has a change of heart and no longer uses the phrase "Bah Humbug!" to describe his everyday life. -
Dombey and Son
Dickens' first novel where he attempted to write of and connect with the upper class too instead of only the lower. Mr. Dombey puts all his trust in his son and none in his daughter when it comes to running the firm once he is gone, even though his son is very ill. -
The Haunted Man
His last Christmas book published. -
David Copperfield
David Copperfield is grown but is telling the reader the story of his younger days. He tells from the beginning all the way throughout his life of how he grows and changes and developes as a character through the different events that come his way. -
Bleak House
The story is about a man named John Jarndyce who lives in the Bleak house along with his cousins whom he has agreed to help bring up, Richard and Ada, and Ester another person that he took interest in and wanted to help provide an education for. Richard and Ada eventually fall in love and get married, and throughout the whole story they are all fighting for a particular on-going case that just can't ever be settled. -
Hard Times
Thomas Gradgrind's family only thinks that material things in life are important. His daughter marries a banker for the sole reason that doing so will increase the chances her brother has of being able to rob him. The plan is a success. (Etc.) -
Little Dorrit
Dickens uses imprisonment to be the theme of this book in several different ways. -

Great Expectations
A bildungsroman about a boy named Pip who reflects on his life as he was growing and becoming an "uncommon man" (what he always dreamed of being). Pip's life is changed from the time he is a young boy and helps an escape convict. This convict proves to play a major role in all the following years of his life. -

Dicken's last finished novel. -
The Mystery of Edwin Drood
His last novel that he ever began. It was left unfinnished due to his death in June.
