    The eleven digit dial was invented by a mortician named Almon B. Strowger. He was convinced that the local operators were diverting all the mortuary business calls to his competitors. So, he decided to do away with operators. He was granted a patent on March 10, 1891. And thus, the Strowger Automatic Exchange (which later became the Automatic Electric Company then finally GTE) came into being. This particular desk set was found in a garage in Grants Pass, Oregon by its present owner.

    This type of upright desk set was used for inter office communications. The S.H. Couch Company made both desk and wall sets. This inter-phone was found at a yard sale in Manhatten Beach, California.

    This telephone was designed so that the users voice vibrated the diaphragm through holes in the top of the transmitter housing while speaking directly into the mouthpiece. Any unwanted loud noise entered the transmitter housing both from the holes on top and underneath the diaphragm thus canceling itself out.
