Roosevelt imposed a ban on shipments of weapons and war material to countries at war . -
USS Panay incident
The gunboat USS Panay was attacked and sunk by the Japanese the day after the Japanese attack Nanking. Three men were killed and 43 were wounded.
Though Japan claimed they didn't see the flags on the ship it caused americans to start hating the Japanese. -
Germany lets loose two battleships on Atlantic
The Deutschland and the Graf Spree patrol Atlantic sinking more than 4 US merchant vessels.
Germany destroyed US ships pushing the US to join the Allies in the fight. -
Cash and Carry
Replaced the Neutrality Acts of 1936. The revision allows the sale of material to belligerent countries as long as the countries transport the materials with their own ships and that they pay in cash.
Roosevelt felt that the help was needed in Europe after Germany invaded Poland. -
England begins Rationing
Germans attacked aid ships bound for Britain in order to bring the country to its kneess.
This caused the US to send ships to guard aid ships further pushing them to war. -
US restricts oil and steel trade with Japan
To disrupt the Japanese war economy the US enacts a restrictive licensing program for its steel and oil.
America knew that an attack from Japan was emenent so the US wanted to weaken their forces. -
Japan attacks Pearl Harbor
Japan launches a surprise attack on the US at the naval base of Pearl Harbor, HI. The attack caused over 2,400 american deaths and sunk the USS Arizona.
This pushed the US over the edge and caused the US to enter the war fighting on with the Allied side. -
