Horace Mann helped establish the Department of Education in Massachusetts. He helped layed the foundation of modern education and the belief education should be free and supported by the government -
Land-Grant Act
This act allowed federal land and resources to be put towards higher education and make it more accessible to people. The universities set up helped people outside the social elite be able to get a higher education. -
Brown v. Board of Education
This landmark decision made segregation of schools illegal. It took a while for schools to integrate, but that would not have happened without this decision. This helped people of all races get an equal access to a quality education. -
Sputnik
This event caused a focus on Science and Math education. This also was a point where there was a big focus on weeding out potential people to go to college. -
No Child Left Behind
This act tried to get the US on track with the rest of the world in terms of education. What it actually did was just make schools make on testing in order to get funding for the schools. This act was seen as not successful.
