5 Historic Events of American Education

  • Horace Mann

    Horace Mann
Mann, The Father of American Education, believed that education should be made available to all citizens. During his time as secretary, Mann opened the Common Schools. The Common Schools were available to more citizens, were higher quality, and were more student friendly. The movement of Common Schools by Mann was a huge turning point in the American education history. If Mann had not worked hard to make schools available to more citizens, schools today may look a lot different.
  • NEA Committee of Ten

    NEA Committee of Ten
The Committee of Ten set standard curriculums within the United States for public schools. This greatly influenced the education within America. Without a curriculum, schools would not be teaching the way they are teaching today. Having a set curriculum of a certain number of years in school and certain subjects taught, provides equality and unity to all in American education.
  • Elementary And Secondary Act (ESEA)

    Elementary And Secondary Act (ESEA)
After President Lyndon B. Johnson passed the ESEA act, schools started to receive necessary funding. ESEA funded the American elementary schools, secondary schools, and head start programs. It also ensured equal access to education for all and equal opportunities for higher education. The ESEA was a very important part of the American education as it provided more availability to resources that were necessary for education. Without the ESEA, schools would not have been able to serve all.
  • No Child Left Behind (NCLB)

    No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
The NCLB act has a great influence on education. By ensuring that students achieve learning goals in a safe classroom with prepared teachers, the NCLB act provides a good education to all students. The NCLB act also provides a fair education by implementing annual progress reports, new standards for teachers, and mandatory testing. All of these factors result in a very well organized and a high end education program for all citizens.
  • Individual Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

    Individual Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
IDEA provides free and appropriate education for all children with disabilities and also ensures that all public schools must provide programs that meet the needs of children with disabilities. Not only is school something that these children need, but IDEA creates an equal learning environment for all children, with or without disabilities. IDEA is a very important event in the American education history because it provides equality to all students. Every person deserves the right to education.
