    Before 1942 the Americas were isolated from the Eastern Hemisphere. After Columbus found the Americas. The Native Americans and Europeans traded food and goods as a result the Europeans caused the spread of deadly germs.

    In 1565, Spaniards settled St. Augustine in what is now Florida. Later, English colonist came.

    The colonies wanted to make their own laws. The colonies of Virgina were allowed to create the House of Burgesses. Communities elected respresentatives to make laws for the colony.

    In the War of 1812, the United States declared war against Great Britain because it attempted to restrict U.S. trade, impressment of American seamen, and America’s desire to expand its territory. In August 1814 the British captured and burned the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. The ratification of the Treaty of Ghent on February 17, 1815, ended the war.

    Fort Sumter is attacked from the Confederate Army marking the start of the US Civil War. July 4, 1861 - Lincoln, in a speech to Congress, states the war is..."a People's contest...a struggle for maintaining in the world, that form, and substance of government, whose leading object is, to elevate the condition of men..."
  • Transcontinental Railroad

    Transcontinental Railroad
    In Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869 the last spike is driven and the transcontinental railroad allowed the country to be connected from the east coast to the west coast. It used to take 6 months to travel accross the county, now it only takes a week. It also used to cost $1000 and after the railraod was completed it cost $150.

    World War I also known as the First World War or the Great War, was a global war centred in Europe that began on July 28, 1914 and lasted until November 11, 1918. More than 9 million soldiers and 7 million civilians died as a result of the war. The United States joined the Allies in 1917.

    World War II also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, It involved the majority of the world's nations. It was the most widespread war in history, and directly involved more than 100 million people, from more than 30 different countries. It was marked by mass deaths of civilians, including the Holocaust. The US involvement was sparked by Japan's Bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

    Barak Obama is the 44th and current President of the United States, and the first African American to hold the office. He was inaugurated as President on January 20, 2009. He was re-elected as President in November 2012.
