  • More flyovers or elevated expressways?

Most road-users are happy to zip across a junction using a flyover but entry and exit points are still difficult to navigate. According to Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar, flyovers allow vehicles to reach their destinations faster.

    The Hindu A Srivathsan Oct 7,2009 Chennai: There will be no change to the alignment of the proposed elevated expressway from Chennai Port to Maduravoyal despite objections raised by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF). The proposed 19-km expressway will start from Chennai Port and continue along the banks of the Cooum till Koyambedu. From Koyambedu, it would ply at the centre of the existing road up to Maduravoyal on Chennai bypass.

    Webindia123 Chennai: Union Minister for Shipping and Highways T R Baalu today said the foundation stone for construction of an elevated highway from War Memorial near Chennai Port to Maduravoyal, covering a distance of 18.4 km, would be laid soon. Talking to newspersons after calling on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence, he said the project would be executed at a cost of Rs 1500 crore. It would be implemented jointly by the Central and State governments.

At a seminar on Waterways in Chennai on Thursday, Ramachandran said the board would bring in regulation to stop tanneries dumping their waste into the waterways.

The Expert Appraisal Committee for Coastal Regulation Zone (Infrastructure Development and Miscellaneous Projects), convened a few weeks ago, scrutinised the project and did not recommend it for Costal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance.
