McMurphy shows up in the ward one morning and moves around among the men, both Acutes and Chronics, introducing himself and avoiding the show required upon admission to the ward.

McMurphy find ou who's-TOP DOG- and says he intends to be BIG MAN on the ward from now on

In his first afternoon meeting, he's observing how Nurse Ratched puts all the men against one another. After the meeting is over, he's laughing and joking with the men about how Nurse Ratched is leading all the men to peck off eachothers balls. \

McMurphy tries to get Nurse Ratched to turn the music down or off, but she politely tell him that this wouldnt be fair to the Chronics, who cant relieve boredom through card games the wy the Acutes can.

McMurphy brings up the tub room again, with the doctors support, who says they have plenty of staff for the tub room

McMurphy next idea is switching the cleaning schedule around so they could watch the World Series baseball game on television in the afternoon. The men wouldn't back him up, they were then called gutless

He brings the vote up again at the next meeting and everyone backs him up. Nurse Ratched decides to be difficult and tells him he needs one more vote for it to be accurate. Before he could get the last vote, she closes the meeting.

McMurphy turns on the tv to the World Series baseball game. Nurse Ratched turns it off from were she is at in the Nurse area. He then watches the blank tv in protest, as if the game was really on. The Acutes joined as if they were at a real baseball game.

McMurphy finds out that Nurse Ratched has the power to keep him there in the asylum as long as she wants, and that changes his whole attitude.

When Cheswick brings up the issue of cigarettes, McMurphy is silent. He doesnt even have his back when he is getting sent to the disturbed ward

He realizes that the men are too afraid to be out in the "real world"

McMurphy discovers that most of the men are in ward voluntarily- he's one of the two acutes that are committed

When he discovers this, he question the other men as to why they stick around.

Nurse Ratched leaves McMurphy alone for along time, and begins to plan a fishing trip.

The fishing trip is successful and McMurphy manages to get laid
