During this time R & B became the music crave. It had several famous artists and one of the greatest was Louis Jordan. He wrote "Five Guys Named Moe" and also " You Gotta Have A Beat". during this time as well 78 RPM records were available to the public which enhanced the careers of a large number of recording artists. -
Important R & B Artists
Ruth Brown or known as " Miss Rythm" was a huge hit during this time. Her song "Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean" became very popular during this time. She introduced this R & B style to blacks and whites and was an insporation for generations of female singers. During this time Ray Charles and Sam Cooke as well were becoming a large part of R & B. -
The Begining of Rock and Roll
Rock and Roll has been debated on when it started however most believe that rock and roll stared in the 1950's with the song "The Fat Man" produced by Fats Domino's. -
Rock and Rolls True Superstar
Rock and Rolls superstar was Elvis Presely he was the man described as "white man that sounds black." he recordered his first song at the age of 18 and caught the attention of Sam Phillips. he was the first performer to combine country and blues into the style known as rockabilly. His famous songs are "Heartbreak Hotel" and " In The Ghetto". -
The Classic Era of Rock and Roll
The classical era of rock and roll was defined as lasting from 1954 through 1959. However just because this first generation of rock was starting to fade away the music industry would introduce something which yoounger fans would not be able to resist and would keep the music industry alive. -
Black Artists Which Over came The White Mans World of Music
During this time segregation was a big deal even in the music industry however several black artists over came this racial conflict and became succesful. One of the greatest was Fats Domino which produced many wonderfully written songs such as "Ain't That A Shame" and "Blueberry Hill" which were written in 1955 and 1956. -

In this year Leiber and Stoller's produced the song " Yakety Yak" which became a favorite to generations. This song is a great exanmple of how a teenager feels about there parents and I beleive that this is a song which defines this time where rebellion was becoming more of an issue. -

The 1960's is when R & B began to break down into distinct groups. During these years the Motown Soound became aprat of music history. This distinct sound came from Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson.These men created pop classics that still have their appeal today. -
Teen Pop
With music changing and becoming more daring there had to be a new elemnet added which would become teen pop.Ths type of music would be produced by yoounger artists whic would have snappy songs and that rebellious edge to it. -
Surf Music
another popular sound of the early 1960's was surf music which was guitar based rock and roll songs about girls, cars, and other California based activities.The leaders of this type of music were The Beach Boys. Some of their famous songs are "California Girls", "God Vibrations", and Wouldn't It Be Nice". -
The 1960's R & B
In 1961 the songs "Stand By Me" and " Spanish Harlem" were written by Ben E. King. the song " Stand By Me" has become a very popular love song and can be heard quite often. This song also shows how R & B was emotional so that everyone could enjoy it. -
The British Have Arrived
In 1964 the british sound had arrived in America because the earlier music was considered to be tame. These singers were talented, smart, and of course photogenic. They produced a perky blend of country, R & B, and early rock. The most famous was The Beatles which would be considered a legend for the generations to come. -
Women Singers of The 1960's
Aretha Franklin was a large part of the R & B scene during the 1960's. In 1967 she produced the songs "Respect", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", "Chain of Fools" and in 1968 she produced the song " Think"'. the song"Respect has become extremely popular and used in movies and advertisements. -
Mid to late 1960's
By the end of the 60's rock and roll was now being called rock. It was now taking on different forms such as the psychedelic rock which came from San Fransisco Bay Area. One of the most famous of these performers was Jimi Hendrix which was said to be the greatest live performer. The 60's came to an end with Woodstock which had many famous artists. -
The 1970's of R & B
In the 1970's the R & B sound was given a funkier edge by artists such as Billy Paul, The O'Jays,The Intruders, and Harold Melvin. -

In the 1970's many new types of music had come aboout such as disco, punk, glam rock, and progressive rock. These types of music would give listeners a wide range of listening oppertunitys. -
R & B of The 1980's
In the 1980's Michael Jackson became a huge hit of the music industry. His music combined soul, rock,and dance music. His biggest hits of this time were "Rock With You", "Thriller", "Billie Jean", and "Beat It". R & B was becoming more advanced and the listeners could not get enough of it. -
The 1980's and New Music
In the 1980's there would be new wave, heavt metal, dance-pop, pop metal,alternative rock, grunge, and teen pop. These types of music would reign on for generations but however rock and roll would be lost within the mix and brought back by the older songs which would be revisited for new ideas.
