  • My Grandfather's Inability To Move

My grandfather was having trouble moving and couldn't get around.
  • He Wouldn't Ask For Help

He suffered from self sufficiency syndrome. Self sufficiency syndrome, as the book says, is "characterized by an inability and unwillingness to ask for help or delegate because of the belief that no one can do it as well as you can" (13). He thought that we couldn't help him walk again.
  • He Didn't Want To Give Up Control

He wanted to do everything himself and liked to be in control. The book says, " Let go of feeling you have to Control everything and that asking feels like giving up that control" (14). This is one of the main things that needs to happen when asking for help and it was hard to relinquish that control over his own body.
  • Afterwards

After he got help for his walking problem, he experienced some minor eating problems. He said that these were not serious but my mom and my aunt insisted on getting him help. The book says, "Keep in mind that they may not always need help" (15). My grandfather got really annoyed with them and fixed the problem himself, showing that he didn't need any help.
