    Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th President of the United States on this day. He was the first Republican President, and won the election by nearly 83%. He was 6'4", and of a muscular build, and at one point was said to have thrown a cat caller out of a debate by his collar and the seat of his pants.
  • South Carolina Secedes

    South Carolina secedes from the Union. South Carolina was thew first State to Secede from the Union, because of Abraham Lincoln's election.

  • First Shot fired on Fort Sumpter

    Although Edmund Ruffin Claimed to have fired the first shot on Fort Sumpter, he was not. Lieutenant Henry S. Farley ordered the first shot fired, not the Secessionist Virginian. This battle lasted well into the night, and finally the Union forces surrendered. The one casualty of the battle was a Confederate horse.

    Both Armies planned to attack the others' left flank, but the Confederates had reinforcements arrive in time to hold their left flank against the Union(Coincidentally, this is where "Stonewall" Jackson earned his famous Nickname.), and send the Federals running all the way back to washington.
  • The Battle of Harpers Ferry

    The battle of Harper's Ferry was something more of a Skirmish than an actual battle, with only 217 casualties for the Union, and only 286 casualties for the Confederates. When you compare it with other battles of the Civil war, it is more of a hiccup in the Civil War.
  • Battle of Antietam

    At the Battle of Antietam, more men were lost and wounded than in all previous American wars combined. The blood spilled in the back-and-forth battle here was devastating to both sides, but the Union was victorious.
  • Battle of Fredricksburg

    Burnside Tried an incursion into the Confederate Capitol, and was turned back with horrible casualties, without inflicting any noticable damage to the Confederates. It was basically a massacre.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    President Abraham Lincoln gives Emancipation Proclamation Speech, freeing all slaves in rebelling states, and drafting any slaves from the south that the Union may want to use in the military.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    The first shots were fired over Marsh Creak, at 5:30 AM, after which the Confederates moved foreward cautiously towards the Federal Forces stationed at Gettysburg.
  • Chattanooga Campaign

    General Grant faced off against General Bragg, and defeated him at Chattanooga. President Lincoln stated that this was as important as taking Richmond.
  • The Battle at Cold Harbor

    The battle at Cold Harbor was a major loss for the Union, because they hopelessly threw thousands of men onto the defenses of Lee's embedded troops, never gaining even the slightest reward for the blood they lost.
  • Start of Sherman's March to the Sea

    General Sherman intended to lay down a Scorched Earth Policy on the Southern States, Killing Livestock, burning fields, tearing up railroads, and overall turning the Confederate War effort against itself. Him and his men would place railroad ties over their fires, then wrap them around trees. These became known as "Sherman's bowties".
  • Appomattox Courthouse surrender

    General Lee was surrounded, unsupplied, and badly in need of some luck when he agreed to surrender. He showed up in a proper dress uniform, where Grant showed up in a mud-caked and filthy field uniform.
  • Lincoln Assassinated

    Abraham Lincoln assassinated by John Wilks Booth at the Ford's Theatre. He shot Lincoln in the back of the head at point blank range, then jumped 11 feet to the stage below, where he broke his leg just above the ankle. Many in the audience thought he yelled something in latin, but this is unconfirmed.
