American Revolution
- The American colonies broke away from Great Britain, became independent, and created their own nation.
- The US actually became independent on September 3, 1783.

U.S. Constitution
-The basic law of the US. It explains all the powers of the branches of the government.
-on June 21, 1788 the constitution went into effect when New Hampshire became the 9th state to sign it.
- North Carolina was the 12th state to sign. -
The Federalist Era
Men like Alexander Hamilton and John Marshall sought to make the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. -
PRESIDENT JEFFERSON
During the time Jefferson was in office, he attempted to reverse the federalist policies. -
War of 1812
-This was the 2nd war for independence.
-It was a war between the US and Great Britain. -
AGE OF NATIONALISM
-This was the time period from 1812-1820 -

MANIFEST DESTINY
-Some people believed that god wanted America to expand more to the west.
-This led to the Mexican War from 1846-1848.
-It also led to conflicts between the North & South.
-James Polk provoked a war with Mexico in 1846. -

-The US Added more territory to the world, as a result of that the Mexican War happened. -

-This was the war between the North and confederate states of America. -
RECONSTRUCTION
-This was the period after the Civil War when Southern states were re-admitted to the Union. -

-This is when the US increased its manufacturing capability as Big Business became a huge force in American society. -
PROGRESSIVE ERA
-Aimed to return control of the government.
-To the people, restore economic opportunities, & correct injustices in American life. -
IMPERIALISM
-The US sought to have influence over foreign nations to expand its markets. -

-Global military that took place in Europe. -

-Prohibition, Speakeasies, Gangsters, & the traditional roles of women were challenged. -

-Major worldwide economic downturn.

-This was the Worldwide conflict between the Allied powers & the Axis powers. -

-Political, Legal, and Social struggle by black Americans to gain full citizenship rights & to achieve racial equality by fighting segregation & discrimination. -

-US attempt to maintain our National security by fighting against al Qaeda & another extremist groups that wish to destroy America.
