20th Century Timeline

  • Mass Production of Vehicles

    By the early 1900's gasoline cars begain over taking other types of motor cars in popularity. As the market grew, so did the industrial production. With the start of mass production, design and aesthetic value became an increasing industry.
  • End of WWI

    On the 11th of november Germany signed an armistice with the Allies, bringing the first world war to an end. It was signed at the Ferdinand Foch's railway carriage headquarters at Compiegne. The armistice was signed at 6 am and came into action 5 hours later. "The loss of so many men, and women increasingly assumed the physical and financial burden of caring for families". This explains the devastating effect of the first world war, proving the cause for celebration when the war was ended.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    The treaty of Versailles was signed after the ending of WW1, stating the official peace between Germany and the Allies.The treaty was signed in paris, at the vast Versailles Palace. "The German government was given three weeks to accept the terms of the treaty". The germans replied with a lengthy list of complaints however they eventually agreed to sign the treaty and bring official peace.
  • The Jazz Age

    Starting the the early 1920's, many people had achieved weath for the war and a new society was forming from the remains of the society destroyed by the war. The younger generation especially, began a modern age tradition of shortening their clothes and disobeying the older generation, who the distrust after the war. With the outrageous new generation forming, so did the growth of Jazz. "The music is sensuous, the female is only half dressed and the motions may not be described in family news"
  • Invention of television

    The concept of a television was achieved by a mass of people working together and alone to contribute to the invention of the television. The early inventors either attempted to build electical or mechanical television displays. The electrical however, soon replaced the mechanical due to improved functuality.
  • Market Crash of 1929

    On the 24 of October, also known as black thursday, the stock markets plummeted, opening a pathway for the great depression. After the booming confidence from the end of WW1 people began investing all their savings in stocks. However on the 24th prices decreased dramatically and people began selling their stocks.'A group of bankers pooled their money and invested a large sum back into the stock market". However this was only a short term fix as the market then crashed again the following tuesday
  • Great Depression

    Following black thursday, black tuesday was the official start of the great depression as the money invested by the banks to save the market 5 days earlier, had run out. The extremity of the depression was due to the fact that not only people, but banks had invested in stock, and thus lost their money when the market crashed. "Weapons, artillery, ships, and airplanes were needed'. This states some of the industries created by WW2 that provided employment and ended the deppression.
  • 1938 Day of Mourning

    The 1938 day of mourning was a unity between the europeans and the aborigines, the first aboriginal rights settlement held in australia. The day was named the Day of 'Mourning' because it is not a day to celebrate progess, it is a day to regret the decisions of the past. "150 years of misery and degradation imposed upon the original native inhabitants by the white invaders of this country." This is the explanation of the name from the organizers of the event.
  • Start of WW2

    The second world war offically begun with the German Nazi envaision of Poland. Within weeks Poland had surrended to the Nazi's, causing brittain and france to declare war on Germany. The war would then last a long 6 years, causing some of the most devestating loss of life in human history.
  • Japanese Attack of Pearl Harbor

    On the morning of december 7th, the Japanese launched a surprise air attack on the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack provoked an almost instant response for the Americans to declare war on the japanese. The reason for this attack was the Japanese wanting to expand further, thus attempting to destroy the USA who was trying to prevent them.
  • Bombing of Darwin

    On the 19th of Feburary the mainland of australia was attacted for the first time in the war. Two japanese air raids bombed darwin, killing 243 people.The result of this bombing, was half of darwin's population fleeing south. "Twenty military aircraft were destroyed, eight ships at anchor in the harbour were sunk, and most civil and military facilities in Darwin were destroyed." This was the intentions of the japanese, to render the darwin naval base in-operable so they could attack Timor.

    The United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child states that each child has the right to a childhood, to be educated, to be healthy, to be treated fairly and to be heard. "It's the most complete statement of children’s rights ever produced and is the most widely-ratified international human rights treaty in history." This quote explains the historic development of this human rights statement. This statement has recieved international support and has been signed by many countries.
