20th Century Timeline

  • The Treaty of Versailles

    This was a peace settlement created for Germany following WW1. The terms included: accept the new map of Europe, accept the decisions made by the new League of Nations, limit the size of its army and navy, to give up its Empire, to accept blame for the war and to pay reparations to countries that suffered damage.
  • The Jazz Age

    This was a time throughout the 1920's where jazz music and dance became quite popular. This is also known as 'The Roaring Twenties' or 'The Golden Twenties'. It was an influential time for both music and culture. The term 'Jazz Age' was created by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
  • Market Crash of 1929

    This date also known as, Black Tuesday or The Wall Street Crash (of 1929). Beginning in late October this was the most significant and devastating 'crash' in US history. This event was a main factor in the 10 year Great Depression.

    This was a devestating global economic depression that lasted for most through the 1930's - late 1930 or mid 1940's. It is most commonly seen as The Great Depression occuring after the market crashed in America.
  • 1938 Day of Mourning

    The 1938 Day of Mourning was an occurence in Australia. This was a day of celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the landing of the first Australian fleet. However, the Aboriginals had different ideas; these being expressed on this particular day.
  • Japanese Attack of Pearl Harbour

    On the morning of December 7th a surprise attack was launched upon the US Naval Base. This base was located in Pearl Harbour, Hawaii. The Americans being so outraged towards this attack declared war the following day! This offially brought them into WW2.

    This was both the first and largest single attack on Australia. On this particular attack Japan 'battled' the civilians of Darwin. They set somewhat havock amongst the harbour/coastal area.

    The United States of America used a huge 20,000 TNT equivalent atomic bomb. This flattened the city and killed many citizens; an estimated 70,000.
  • Invention of the Internet

    The 'inventing' of the Internet began in the 1950's with the developments of electronic computers. However it continued into the 1960's.
  • Melbourne Olympics

    Melbourne Olympics
    The 1956 Summer Olympics (aka Games of the XVI Olympaid) was an event held in Melbourne, VIC, Australia. The event lasted from 22nd Nov - 8th December. This was the first of the games to be held in the Southern Hemisphere. However, the equestrian events were not held in Melbourne due to quarantine regulations.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    In October of 1962 an American spy located and photographed nuclear missile sites being built in Cuba (by the Solviet Union). After a straining 13 days of secretive work throughout the American Governmant. J F Kennedy broadcast himself discussing the crisis. It was agreed that the Solviet Union would dimantle the sites, but the US were not to invade Cuba.

    I Have a Dream - Martin Luther King Speech
    The 'I Have a Dream' speech was publically delivered to over 250,000 civil rights activists by Martin Luther King.
  • Australian Freedom Ride

    Australian Freedom Ride
    Students from the University of Sydney formed a group that went by the name of SAFA (Student Action for Aboriginals). Lead by Charles Perkins the group travelled around NSW to protest Aboriginal civil rights.

    The first mobile phone was invented by John F. Mitchell and Dr Martin Cooper. The cellular device weighed around 2 kg. It became available to the public in 1983, and went by the name of DynaTAC 8000x.
  • Release of 'Crocodile Dundee'

    Release of 'Crocodile Dundee'
    This iconic film was a comedic film set in both the Australian Outback and New York City. It featured actors Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski - who later married. 'Crocodile Dundee' had two sequel movies - 'Crocodile Dundee 2' and 'Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles'.
  • The Fall of the Berlin Wall

    The Fall of the Berlin Wall
    On the evening of the 9th of November an announcement was made by government official Günter Schabowski. He stated 'Permanent relocations can be done through all border checkpoints between the GDR (East Germany) into the FRG (West Germany) or West Berlin.'. Both the nation and the world were in celebration. People chipped away at the Berlin Wall - keeping the pieces as momentos and collectibles.
