2010's Technological Progression

  • NeuroPace

    NeuroPace
Invented by Souhel Najjar. NeuroPace is a device that can be attached to the brain to track and stabilize brain waves in order to prevent epileptic seizures.
  • Alexa

    Alexa
Initially released in 2014 to Amazon Prime members, generally released to the public in 2015. Invented by Amazon. Alexa is a virtual assistant programmed to react and adapt to peoples' individual questions and commands. Alexa has, for many, taken over many daily responsibilities like setting reminders, making lists, and even playing music and controlling the lights.
  • Face ID

    Face ID
Launched in 2017 for the first time on the iPhone X. Invented by Apple. Although maybe a bit frustrating sometimes, especially in the beginning, Face ID has improved security for peoples' phones and made them much easier to protect, and provided an easier way for many people, including those with certain disabilities, to unlock and access their phones easier.
  • Osseo-Neuromuscular Prosthesis

    Osseo-Neuromuscular Prosthesis
Created by a collaboration under the DeTOP project. The prosthesis has sensors in the hand that send signals to a receiver implanted in the brain, allowing for better dexterity, and for the user to actually feel from the prosthetic. Only one patient so far has received this type of prosthesis, but with the data they are collecting, they could make many more, which will forever change how people with missing limbs live.
  • Orion Cortical Visual Prosthesis System

    Orion Cortical Visual Prosthesis System
Invented by Second Sight Medical. Orion implants use a small camera on a pair of glasses that sends a signal to a receiver implanted on the back of the skull which sends it to the visual cortex of the brain, allowing the user to see. This technology is still very much in the experimental stage and there are very few who have had the procedure, but it has proven to be safe and effective so far.
