2.01 Overview of American History

  • Jamestown Settlement

    The Virginia Company of London sent 104 English men and boys to begin a settlement on the banks of Virginia’s James River. The main reason for the Virginia Company sending them was because the stockholders were hoping they would be able to make a profit from the resources of the New World. The new settlement suffered many things like harsh winters, lack of fresh water and spread of disease. They managed to survive and became the America’s first permanent English colony.
  • Mayflower Compact

    Mayflower Compact
    The Mayflower Compact started what is now the democratic democracy. It was the first written to state that the opinion of the majority would be the one that rules. The main importance of the Mayflower Compact is it was the first step to the government we have today.

    Revolutionary War

    The reason the Revolutionary War began was because the British Army was trying to take the ammunition from Concord, Massachusetts. In 1776, George Washington crossed the Delaware River and went to New Jersey and defeated the British Garrisons in Trenton and Princeton. In 1778, the USA and France signed a pact of trade and commerce which allowed the US to depend on France as an ally. France then decided to declare war on Britain. Great Britain slowly started pulling their troops away from America
  • Louisiana Purchase

    The Louisiana Purchase more than doubled the size of America, which gave America access to very important trade routes. The land would eventually become thirteen new states and America just paid pennies for an acre.
  • Assassination of Lincoln

    Assassination of Lincoln
    While Abraham Lincoln was in the presidential box at Ford’s Theater he was shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth. Booth fired one shot at point-blank range with a .44-caliber. The shot went through Lincoln’s ear and into his brain and he died less than 12 hours later.

    WWI

    When Austria-Hungary’s arch duke was killed, they blamed it on Serbia which is how WW1 got started. Germany, Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria sided with Austria-Hungary while Great Britain, France, Belgiem, Russia, the U.S., Greece, Portugal, Romania and Japan sided with Serbia. Austria and Bulgaris both wanted separate peaces with the Allies, so Germany finally signed an armistice on November 11th, 1918.

    Great Depression

    The Great Depression put the American people into an economic crisis; there had never been one that bad before or since. It was the worst and longest decline in the economic history; it lasted for more than a decade. Because of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s proposed the New Deal which changed the relationship between the American people and their government.

    Cold War

    The Cold War was a long period of tension between the United States and Eastern Europe. These two countries became known as superpowers. The United States and Eastern Europe never official declared war on each other, but they fought indirectly in proxy wars, the arms race, and the space race.

    Korean War

    The Korean War was fought between South Korea and communist North Korea. The Korean War was the first major conflict of the Cold War. The Soviet Union supported North Korea while the United States supported South Korea. The war ended with little resolution. The countries are still divided today and North Korea is still ruled by a communist government.
  • Fall of Berlin Wall

    Fall of Berlin Wall
    For 28 years, the 28 mile Berlin Wall had split the city in two and divided the nation with two million tons of concrete. To get past the wall some people dug under it, hid in car trunks, or tried to fly over it in a hot-air balloon. Eventually people on the other side started to climb on top of the wall and destroy segments of the concrete wall.
