    In September 1949, Howard Unruh shot and killed 13 of his neighbors (3 of them children) with a handgun. He never went to trial as he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and placed in a hospital for the criminally insane. Unruh died in 2009 at the age of 88.

    In August 1966, Charles Whitman, a former University of Texas student, shot 47 people from the 28th floor of the school’s clock tower. 16 victims died and 31 were badly wounded.
