  • Americans with Disabilities act- 1990

    On July 26, 1990 President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities act (ADA). At the time this was passed there was no other legislation that came close to affirming right for people with disabilities in the United States. This was a bipartisan bill first introduced by senator Tom Harkin. In 2008 there were amendments added to the ADA passed by congress and signed by the son of George H.W Bush President George W. Bush.
  • NAFTA

    On January 1, 1994 President Bill Clinton singed NAFTA into law. NAFTA is a trade agreement between the United States, Canada and Mexico. At the time there was very little opposition to NAFTA but overtime people began to see the negatives. While NAFTA helped lower the cost of goods, was good for GDP and good for diplomatic relations one of the main problems is that the U.S. lost a lot of manufacturing jobs. (Class discussion 4/24/23)
  • Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act (1994 crime bill)

    Just in time for the midterm elections congress passed the 1994 crime bill and President Bill Clinton Signed it into law. The 1994 crime bill instituted a federal assault weapons ban it didn't stop there as also banned magazines that could hold more than 10 rounds. The bill also created 60 new death penalty offenses. The bill also gave increased funding for police departments across the country to strive for more community policing.
  • 1994 Midterms the Republican revolution

    The Republicans in 1994 were gearing up for the midterm elections. Newt Gingrich a Republican leader in the house was looking to become speaker and wanted a strong majority. Newt Gingrich and Rep. Dick Army drew up the contract with America. Gingrich had promised to Americans that he would help reform the federal government and get spending under control. Republicans won big in both the house and the senate. This was the first time in 40 years that Republicans won the house of representatives.
  • 2000 election

    The 2000 presidential election was between then Republican governor George W. Bush and then democratic vice president Al Gore. The election was close and there was a lot of controversy surrounding the key swing state Florida. Initially it was called for Gore and Bush was about to concede but then the news media said that they got it wrong and it went to the courts. Bush ended up winning Florida by about 500 votes. Bush won 271 electoral votes and Gore won 266 electoral votes.
  • 9/11

    On September 11, 2001 members of the terrorist group al- Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes that were at various airports in the northeast. At 8:46 am crashed into the north tower in NYC's world trade center. Just minutes later a second plane hit the south tower. Over 2,500 people died in the world trade center with even more injured or wounded. Many that were at the WTC that day and months after have suffered from long term health issues as well.
  • 2004 presidential election

    Presidential election between President George W. Bush (R) and Senator John Kerry (D). Bush campaigned on keeping the country safe while also painting the image of Kerry as a flip flopper on foreign policy issues. Kerry led a strong challenge but lost because he didn't express a clear vision. Bush ended up winning 286 electoral votes and won the popular vote by 2.8%. The Republicans also were able to maintain control of both the house and senate. (Class Discussion 4-27)
  • 2008 stock market crash

    The stock market crashed on September 29, 2008 for many reasons. Some of them being the subprime morgatages that were being handed out, the housing bubble bursting and unregulated markets all contributed in the crash of the stock market in 2008. With the election less than two months away Barack Obama was able to use this to blame the republicans for being irresponsible while John McCain tried to separate himself from the mistakes that were made in the Bush administration.   • 2008 election

    The 2008 election was a matchup between Democratic senator form Illinois Barack Obama and Republican Senator from Arizona John McCain. Some of the key issues that the two had to come up with solutions too was the recession and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. McCain couldn't separate himself from the Bush administration as he was a republican and bush was a republican. Obama ran on hope and change and that resigned with the American people. Obama ended up winning.
  • Affordable care act

    On March 23, 2010 President Barack Obama signed the affordable care act. The affordable care act helped increase coverage for Americans that were uninsured and reformed the health insurance market. Some of the reforms it made to private health insurance is it makes companies keep children on their parents plan till they are 26 years old and made insurance accept people even if they have pre existing conditions.
