    1960 Election
    John F. Kennedy goes against Richard Nixon; Kennedy wins by a slim margin most likely because of his outstanding television presentation.
  • Bay of Pigs

    Bay of Pigs
    Essentially, the United States sent in the FBI to try and take out the dictator of Cuba because the United States thought Cuba was going to turn communist.
  • Freedom Rides

    Freedom Rides
    The SCLC wanted to challenge the bus desgregation by going on city busses. At one city, whites fire bombed the busses.
  • Berlin Crisis

    Berlin Crisis
    The leader of Germany did not like East Berlin people going to the capitalist West Berlin, therefore the leader put up a wall so East Berlin could not cross over,
  • Albany Movement

    Albany Movement
    During the Civil Rights Movement, MLK Jr. and his group SCLC and SNCC went to the city of Albany to stop segregation all around. In the end, nothing was changed in the city except many blacks going to jail.
  • Integration at Ole Miss

    Integration at Ole Miss
    One black male wanted to go to an all white college, the college denied his application (although he had the standards to go there) because he was black. Kennedy got the male into the school, yet many riots broke out. Kennedy had to send in the national guard to protect the male all year.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    Cuba was working with the Soviets and the Soviets had missiles being built in Cuba to be launched to every major city in the United States. This event lasted about 13 days.
  • Birmingham Confrontation

    Birmingham Confrontation
    SCLC and SNCC went to Birmingham city to boycott and try to stop segregation. When one protest went wrong because the fire department sprayed the protesters with a fire hose and the fire dogs attacked the students. This was on national television.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    Because Kennedy annoucned he was going to put in a law for the African American's to have equal rights, over 20,000 people showed up at the White House to show support.
  • JFK Assassination

    JFK Assassination
    EIther by a conspiracy or a lone gun man, someone was involved with the shooting of John F. Kennedy, killing him instantly with a shot to the head.
  • Johnson's "Election"

    Johnson's "Election"
    After Kennedy's assassination, Johnson (the vice president to Kennedy) was sworn into office on the plane taking Kennedy back to the White House.
  • Freedom Summer

    Freedom Summer
    Now that the blacks got the law passed for equality, their next goal was to get restrictions on voting eliminated. This summer it did not work but later on it will.
  • Three Teens Missing

    Three Teens Missing
    During the Freedom Summer, two white boys and one black boy were traveling to protest when suddenly they were kidnapped and killed in the middle of no where. This most likely got so much pubblicity because there were two white boys involved.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    Johnson, honoring Kennedy's request, put in the act of equality for all African American citizens.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Incident

    Gulf of Tonkin Incident
    This incident involved a North Vietnam ship hitting one of the United States ships.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

    Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
    This act by Congress allowed President Johnson to take any measures necessary to protect the United States.
  • Free Speech Movement

    Free Speech Movement
    Students who had time on their hands at college wanted to speak out against war.
  • Selma March

    Selma March
    The first Selma march that occured (by the SNCC) was a 54 mile walk but was stopped when the police beat the marchers and gassed them. With this being televised and the country being appauled the president sent out the national guard to protect the marchers from harm.
  • Voting Acts of 1965

    Voting Acts of 1965
    Finally, Johnson passed the Voting Act of 1965 eliminating all restrictions on voting for the African Americans.
  • Latino Boycott

    Latino Boycott
    The Latino Migrant workers wanted better pay for all the time they put in on the farms; therefore they boycotted grapes and lettuce to get what they wanted.
  • Students for Democratic Society

    Students for Democratic Society
    These students were against the war and formed this group to try and change the major issues in society. There was no specific date but it grew rapidly in the mid 1960s.
  • Safety Act

    Safety Act
    The Consumer Movement also passed the National Traffic Act and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966 to ensure safety on the roads.
  • Wholesome Meat Act

    Wholesome Meat Act
    Many people apart of the Consumer Movement believed the meats the United States ate was unsanitary; therefore this act was passed to ensure clean meat.
  • Clean Air Act

    Clean Air Act
    The Environmental Movement passed this act to ensure no DDT was in the air and to keep our planet clean.
  • Tet Offensive

    Tet Offensive
    This surprise attack was considered the turning point of the Vietnam War. The North Vietnam simultanously bombed every major city during the Tet holiday. This attack continued until March.
  • My Lai Massacre

    My Lai Massacre
    United States troops went to the city of My Lai to get a body count. The way they got a body count was by raping innocent women and killing any men, women, children, or baby in site.
  • Johnson's Withdrawal

    Johnson's Withdrawal
    President Johnson's mental ability was drained from the war; therefore he withdrew from the election.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination

    Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination
    During the civil rights movement, the leader MLK Jr. was assassinated in a building. This loss faith and hope in the movement.
  • 1968 Election

    1968 Election
    Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey battle in the 1968 election. The outcome by a slim maragin was Nixon.
  • Man on the Moon

    Man on the Moon
    During Kennedy's presidency, one of his goals were to have a man walk on the moon. This eventually happened with Neil Armstrong being the man.
