Eisenhower is elected president
Republicans chose Dwight D. Eisenhower to run for president in the 50's and ran for eight years. He had been an excellent commander and leader who was pursuasive and able to cooperate.

Massive Retaliation Policy- Domestic Policy under Eisenhower
Eisenhower built a policy on Massive Retaliation. This was the building up of forces in the sky to scare the enemies. He created the Strategic Air Command (SAC), which was an airfleet of bombers with nuclear bombs and would inflict fear on the enemy if they attacked or in war.

Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks refused to give up a bus seat in the "whites only" section and believed in civil rights and equality that was not present at this time. She went to jail for protesting.

US sends satellite into space- Domestic policy under Eisenhower
On this day, the US sent their own satellite into space, competing with the Russians. This showed that US kids were recieving the same information or education, as the Soviets. America was using it's science for something new.

Civil Rights Act Passed
Congress passed the first civil rights act that set up a permanent civil rights commission to search violations of civil rights and to protect voting rights of african americans.

The "sit-in" movement
Four African American college freshman protested and launched a "sit-in" movement in Greensboro, North Carolina. They demanded a service at a whites only lunch counter and fought for equality.

John F. Kennedy is Elected as president
John F. Kennedy ran against Richard Nixon and won, due to Catholic democrats and the new invention of the television, in which he used to show his charismatic self during televised debates. He was the youngest president elected.

Kennedy's Peace Corps- Domestic Policy
John F. Kennedy established the peace corps, in which civilians or volunteers could dedicate their time and effort to the war in traveling to places needed and assist in any help needed. This "new army" was ideal at the time, since economic and social progress was needed.

Kennedy lowers taxes - Domestic Problem

Martin Luther King Jr. is arrested
Martin Luther King, Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee organize a protest and demonstration to fight segregation in Birmingham, Alabama. Martin Luther is arrested for not having a demonstration permit and goes to jail.

JFK's "moral issue"

The March on Washington for Jobs and Education occured on this day in Washington DC, where 250,000 people arrived to protest civil rights. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I have a dream" speech that influenced America.

March on Selma
At the March on Selma, about 25,000 people joined to protest at the city limits of Montgomery. This was led by Martin Luther King Jr. African Americans pleaded for jobs and equality. They were tired of waiting.

Lyndon B. Johnson Passes Immigation Act- Domestic Policy
Lyndon B Johnson passed the Immigration and nationality act of 1965, which abloished the "national origin" quota and doubled the number of immigrants allowed to enter the US anually, up to 290,000.

The Tet Offensive
The Tet Offensive was the largest battle in the Vietnam war and took place because the NFL and the NVA broke the truce that came with the "lunar new year". Over 100 cities were attacked by 85,000 enemies, including assaults on the US embassy, Saigon.

Johnson's encounter with Vietnam
Johnson had been sending troops from American to help in the Vietnam war and more and more it added up over time. He spend billions of dollars in something that the US had gotten itself invovled with. Finally, near the end of his term, on this day, the only thing he could do was declare that he would stop sending troops to Vietnam. Although it was already too late.

Nixon is elected president
Republicans chose Richard Nixon to be elected as president in the election of 1968. He won against George Wallace and Spiro Agnew. He owed his presidency to protests over the war, civil rights, violence and the draft.

Bombing of Cambodia
The North Vietnamese ordered a new offensive against America in their sanctuary in South Vietnam, Cambodia. Richad NIxon took a paranoid, personal offense and bombed Cambodia to destroy North Vietnamese bases hidden. He did not inform the public about this, due to scaring people after he promised he would end the chaos.

Threatening B-52's by Nixon
Nixon ordered B-52 bombs with nuclear weapons at the border of Soviet airspace to convince the Soviet Union that he was capable of ending the Vietnam War this way, but then later tried to pursue detente with the soviets.

Nixon signs the Sickle Cell Anemia Control Act
This act was established to find a cure for sickle cell disease and to do immediate research in the US. Nixon wanted to prove to the country that he cared about science and was able to use money for a health issue in the US.

Watergate Scandal - Domestic problem under Nixon
Five men were caught breaking into the Watergate hotel installing eavesdropping devices. They were part of the Republican committee for the re-election of Nixon. Nixon denied this on public television and refused to give the tapes found to Congress. Later, he did and it exposed him as a liar and resigned due to the scandal.

Paris Peace Accords signed to end Vietnam War
The Paris Peace Accords on "Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam" officially ended direct U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. The 560 prisoners of war were released and there was a sixty day period to withdraw american troops.

Gerald Ford is elected as president
After Nixon resigns, Gerald Ford is chosen as president because he was vice president. He was an eagle scout and very much into sports and pardoned Nixon for his wrong doings.

Economic Policy Board by Gerald Ford- Domestic Policy
Gerald Ford passed this act as president to "whip inflation" and fix the economy. He thought by doing this, inflation would be lowered, thus making unemployment lower. He also gave many speeches about this issue.

Gerald Ford passes women's day- domestic policy
Gerald Ford established women's equality day to show that women are just as equal as men in the work force and to eliminate all sex discrimination inquired by the US. Women could now feel comfortable and pursue what they wanted to do.
