  • Time Magazine Founded

    Time Magazine is founded in New York City, by Henry Luce and Briton Hadden. Time set the stage for modern journalism, being the first magazine organizing news into departments: sports, politics, science, law, etc. By 1927, Time was named the most influential news magazine in the United States.
  • Immigration Act and National Origins Act passed

    Immigration Act and National Origins Act passed. The Immigration Act restricted the amount of immigrants that were allowed into the U.S. through a national origins quota. The National Origins Act was the system of national quotas that restricted the number of immigrants allowed into the United States.
  • Coolidge for President

    Calvin Coolidge is elected for the president of the United States.
  • Stock Market Crash

    The Wall Street Crash of 1929, also known as the worst financial decline in American history, occurs. This acted as a catalyst to the Great Depression, which was a time of extremely low unemployment and economic hardship in America.
  • 21st Amendment ratified

    The 21st Amendment is ratified, which lifted the prohibition on the production, sale, and importation/exportation of alcohol in the United States.
  • Court-Packing Scheme

    FDR initiates the Court-Packing Scheme, which entailed expanding the Supreme Court to 15 members in hopes of making the Supreme Court more efficient and fair.
  • Atlantic Charter drafted and signed

    The Atlantic Charter is drafted and signed. President Franklin Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill met in Placentia Bay to reach the terms of this agreement. In summary, the Atlantic Charter signified eight common principles that the U.S. and Britain would commit to not seek territorial gains from the war.
  • Pearl Harbor bombed

    The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Japanese planes excessively bombed the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, and killed over 2,300 Americans. Their attack effectively sunk 12 ships and severely damaged 9 vessels.
