1920s Timeline With Attitude

  • Women's rights

    Women's rights
The year 1918 was the first year all women were allowed to vote. This was largely contributed by Nellie McClung and the group of five, who were women’s rights activists at the time. The main motivation came from a quote from the election of Canada in 1916, it stated “No woman, lunatic, idiot, or criminal shall vote.”. This is an example of political change because it changed laws. I give this a +2 rating because it shows great advancement in the treatment of ethnical and sexual groups.
  • Prohibition

    Prohibition
In 1918 the alcohol affected peoples lives at work and at home so much that Canada had to ban it. In the student book on prohibition it says one of the main causes of prohibition was WWI, veterans and returned soldiers were drinking to forget. I give this a -1 because it is a decrease in society and treatment of people. Women were reporting being abused and children being abused by their drunk husbands and fathers. This is a political change because it changed rules and laws in the government.
  • Winnipeg General Strike

    Winnipeg General Strike
In 1919 workers in Winnipeg went on strike because they wanted better pay and to be treated more fairly. On our google classroom it says that some people hot this idea from communism in Russia at the time. I give this a -1 because it shows a decrease in workers being treated fairly and more greed from employers. This is an economical change because is changed laws.
  • The Group of Seven

    The Group of Seven
In 1920 a group of seven painters painted landscapes mostly from Algonquin Ontario. This was because they wanted Canadians to accept the beautiful landscapes of Canada (as found in the scrapbook posted on classroom). This is a social change because it changed social behavior. I gave this a +1 rating because it isn’t a very significant change but it did change the way Canadian acted in preserving our natural beauty.
  • First Radio Broadcast

    First Radio Broadcast
In 1923 Forster Hewett hosted the first radio broadcast of a hockey game in Toronto. This is a +1 rating because it shows great advancement in technology for the future, knowing we can do this made us wonder what other technological advancements are possible. This is an social change because it changed behavior, we were now listening to live broadcasts and sports events.
  • Chinese Immigration Act

    Chinese Immigration Act
In 1923 Canada implemented a law saying that Chinese people were no longer allowed to immigrate to Canada. In classroom it says this is because they were pressured by the British. This is political change because it changed laws. I give this a -2 rating because it shows a decrease in treatment of minorities.
  • Cars

    Cars
In 1925 cars were very popular. Ford was a big car manufacturer at the time. In the scrap book it says Ford released a new model called the Model T in 1925. There was especially lots of cars in Ontario. I give this a +2 rating because cars had a big impact on society, you could now go from Toronto to London in 3 hours instead of in 10 hours. This made business so much easier for people. This is an economical change because it created a change in jobs because you could travel farther, faster.
  • Most rez schools at 1 time

Most rez schools at 1 time
In 1931 there was the most residential schools in Canada. ON classroom it says the schools took Indigenous kids from their home in order to shape them more into Christianity. The people working at the residential schools abused the children sent there. Most children still suffer mental health issues from their time at the schools. This is political change because it changed laws. I give this a -2 rating because it shows a decrease in treatment of minorities.
