1920s and Prohibition

  • The 18th Ammendment

    The Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution made it a crime to manufacture, sell, drink or ship alcohol in the U.S. The fear of communism caused a time of panic called the Read Scare.
  • Sacco and Vanzetti

    Italian immigrant anarchists, Sacco and Vanzetti were arrested for murder and robbery. Both men said they were not guilty.
  • What was Nativism

    Nativism, also known as the fear of foreigners, because of a threat to democracy, caused a quota system which allowed only a certain amount of immigrants to come into the U.S. from each nation.
  • Lots of firsts

    Walt Disney creates Mickey Mouse. Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Oscar De Priest became the first African American to be elected to Congress in the north. Octaviano Larrazolo became the 1st Mexican American governor of New Mexico.
  • The president is elected

    A very popular President, Calvin Coolidge was elected to serve again.
  • Cheap and reliable cars

    There were 23 million Model T cars, manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Each car cost less than $500.
  • False accusations

    Although someone had confessed to the murders, Sacco and Vanzetti did not get another trial and they were executed. This same year Charles Lindbergh became the first person to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean.
  • New President

    Herbert Hoover became president. He beat Al Smith, a Catholic. Prejudice against Catholics stopped millions from voting for Smith.
  • Quota system

    The quota system allows only 150,000 European immigrants to come to America.
  • What ended the prohibition

    The Twenty-first Amendment to the Constitution ended Prohibition.
