    (Military) April 22nd-May 25th, 1915- Canadian troops see action for the first time at the Battle of 2nd Ypres in Belgium.

    (Domestic) January 28th, 1915- Manitoba women are the first females in Canada to receive the right to vote, followed by Saskatchewan and Alberta in the same year and British Columbia in 1917.

    (Military) July 1st, 1916- British forces (including Canadians) launch the Somme offensive. By the end of this unsuccessful battle, over 24,000 Canadians are dead or wounded.

    (Military) April 9th, 1917- Canadian forces, led by General Arthur Currie, attack and successfully capture Vimy Ridge.

    (Domestic) June 11, 1917- Prime Minister Borden introduces the Military Service Bill, which would introduce conscription for Canadian men. The Bill becomes law on August 29th. Protests break out in Quebec, which is strongly anti-conscriptionist.

    Military) October 26th, 1917- The Battle of Passchendaele. Over 4,000 Canadians are killed and 12,000 wounded in the “battle of the mud”.

    Domestic) November 1917- Sam Hughes, the Minister of Militia and Defence, is fired by Prime Minister Borden.

    (Domestic) December 6th, 1917- The Halifax explosion. The Belgian ship Imo collides with the munitions ship Mont Blanc, causing an explosion that killed 1,600 people.

    1918 (domestic) May 24th, 1918- All Canadian women over 21 are given the right to vote in federal elections.

    (military) August 8th, 1918- the Battle of Amiens. Canadians begin the “100 Days” campaign to push the Germans out of France.

    (Domestic)September 9th, 1918- the first cases of Spanish influenza are recorded in Quebec. By the time the Spanish ‘flu disappears, 30,000-50,000 Canadians will have died.

    (Military) November 11th, 1918-World War 1 ends with the Germans signing the armistice. 70,000 Canadians were killed and 173,000 were wounded.
