    War of the Spanish Succession

    The War of the Spanish Succession was a conflict that came following the death of Charles II. The war was to decide whether the Spanish Empire passed to the House of Bourbon or the House of Habsburg, which both had valid claims. The Peace of Utrecht concluded the war, leading to the rise of England, at the expense of both Spain and France.
  • Act of Union

    In need of both economic and political safety, both England and Scotland proposed a union. Great Britain (or the United Kingdom) was the product of the Act of Union. It contains England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
  • Georgian Age of England begins

    After the death of Queen Anne, George I inherits the throne, beginning the Georgian Era. While there were many other relatives with stronger claims, he utilizes the Act of Settlement to inherit the throne.

    War of Austrian Succession

    The war was caused by debate over Maria Theresa’s right to inherit the Habsburg territories, and began when Frederick II invaded Silesia. The war ended with the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, in which Maria Theresa inherited most of Austria. However this did not stop the hostility between the countries, which was continued in the Seven Years’ War.

    The Seven Years War was a major European conflict, with France, Austria, and Russia uniting against Prussia, Hanover, and Great Britain. However, it is also seen as a power struggle between France and Great Britain for control of North America.
  • The Reign of Terror begins in France

    The Reign of Terror was a period of mass executions and violence during the French Revolution. These revolts were led by Maximilien Robespierre.
