    The Sherman Antitrust Act was an United States antitrust law or a "competition law" established in the 1890's. It prohibited certain big businesses to be involved in any anticompetitive activites or trusts.

    The Spanish American War
    The Spanish American War was a conflict between the United States and Spain during the late 1800's. After America's involvement in the intervention for the Cuban War for independence; America retaliated by conducting attacks on Spain's Pacific possesions. This led to the Philippine-American war.
  • Steel Industry Monopoly (Andrew Carnegie)

    Steel Industry Monopoly (Andrew Carnegie)
    Around 1900-1901 the steel industry was booming, and at the center of all the production was Andrew Carnegie's corporation. Andrew adopted the Bessemer steel process from England and advanced America's building capabilities.

    There were many rejections and amendments to keep annexation at bay. When the "Treaty of Paris" was signed all rights were given back to Cuba and America's Spanish Empire conflicts were resolved. Exapansion of the United States grew in Cuba (through leases) and in 1902 Cuba was finally granted formal independence.

    The FDA was established by the Department of Agriculture to administrate chemical analyses of agricultural products. It was not known by its present name until the thirties. In 1906 the Food and Drug Act law that prohibited interstate commerce in adulterated and misbranded food and drugs.

    The first Red Scare took place between 1919 and 1920. There was a multitude of paranoia about communism, bolshevism, and anarchism.

    The Stock Market crashed on a Tuesday in late October, and was nick-named "Black Tuesday". It was the most devasting stock market crash in the history of the United States. Consequently America went into a ten year long "Great Depression".

    The Japanese owned the Manchuria railway and in 1931 there was supposed sabotage done to the railroad by some Chinese soldiers. The Japanese retaliated and the League of Nations was powerless to stop the powerful nation.

    Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his inaugural address to over 100,000 people, and revealed his future recovery plans. The New Deal was in effect as of the next day, with the bank holiday. President Roosevelt made America into a interventionist economy that was good for families, the nation, and the economy.

    The 1930's was the period of the "Dust Bowl". The great plains became common ground for dust storms or "black blizzards". For example: "Black Sunday" was one of the worst dust storms in American history. It caused extensive economic and agricultural damage, as did all the other dust storms.

    The attack on Pearl Harbor was a suprise military strike conducted by the imperial Japanese Navy against the United States Naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack led to the United States entry into World War II.

    The Japanese agreed to an unconditional surrender on August 14, 1945. Then in September Japan formally surrenders, ending World War II.

    The Baby Boom started in the late 1940's. The birth rate rose up by twenty percent, and after a few years, young children made up forty percent of the nation's population.

    By the time World War II was over, American officials decided the best stradegy of defense against the Soviet Union was "containment". The goal of this stradegy was to stop containment, and hinder the possibilities of World War III.

    After World War II, the population grew and to accomodate these rising numbers, housing developments sprang up everywhere. The suburbs were helpful to the governent because it provided housing to war veterans.

    The Vietnam War is the longest war in American history and claimed the lives of around 60,000 people. Starting in early November, the Vietnam War was about the division of the country Vietnam and the spread of communistic beliefs.

    The Berlin Wall was a boarder that completely cut off West Berlin from surronding East Germany and East Berlin. It was constructed by the German Democrat Republic. The collapse of the wall was one event that signified the end of the Cold War.

    The Space Race was on! The United States and the Soviet Union were fighting for supremacy in spaceflight capability. The Soviets won the first race by sending Sputnik 1 in 1957. But the United States fired back with putting a man on the moon in Apollo 11.

    In the post Cold War era Gorbachev resigned as president of the Soviet Union. He ceded all of his powers to the president of Russia. The Soviet flag was lowered for the last time over the Kremlin.

    The September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were organized by an Islamic group called al-Qaeda. Between the attacks, a total of 3,000 people died

    The war in Afghanistan followed the September 11 terrorist attacks. It has made an effort to dismember al-Qaeda and remove Taliban power.
