  • The Battle of the Little Bighorn

    Battle between US army and various Indian tribes. Commonly referred to as Custer's Last Stand, ended with major US defeat.
  • Compromise of 1877

    An agreement between southerners to accept Hayes as President if he would remove troops from the South and essentially end reconstruction.
  • Rutherford B. Hayes is inaugurated as the 19th President

  • Thomas Edison receives patent for the lightbulb

  • James A, Garfield inaugurated as the 20th President

  • President Garfield shot by Charles Giteau

    He would die 11 weeks later, on Sep 19, 1881
  • Chester A. Arthur inaugurated as the 21st President

  • Grover Cleveland inaugurated as the 22nd President

  • Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks dies of illness

  • Dawes Act begins to be in effect

    Also known as the General Allotment Act, it codified land ownership on Reservations. It forced private ownership of land onto the Native Americans who were used to the collective ownership of the tribe. Began to treat them as individuals instead of tribe members.
  • Benjamin Harrison inaugurated as the 23rd President

  • The Wounded Knee Massacre

    US troops killed hundreds of Lakota Indians, many of whom were women and children. Additionally, many of the men were already disarmed and had little to fight with.
  • The Start of the Panic of 1893

    Around this date, there were problems with the railroad industry, which led to economic downturn and then panic. The panic fed the downturn which continued the panic. This led to several strikes, including the Pullman strike of 1894. The panic continued until about 1897.

  • The USS Maine explodes and sinks in harbor

    Increases US tensions with Spain, ultimately leading to the Spanish-American war.
  • Start of the Spanish-American War

  • The Battle of San Juan Hill

    Major US victory, raises popularity of John J. Pershing as well as Theodore Roosevelt and his "Rough Riders."
  • Fighting ends in the Spanish-American war with a peace agreement

  • Signing of the 1898 Treaty of Paris

    Officially ends the Spanish-American war. Spain cedes Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. In turn, the US paid twenty million dollars. Became effective April 11, 1899.
  • The 1899 Battle of Manila starts Philippine-American War

    The war would not end until Jul 2, 1902.
  • Vice President Garret Hobard dies of illness
