    Agustín de Iturbide was a military officer. He was asked in 1820 to lead a final battle against the revolutionaries. A liberal revolution was going on in Spain that same year. Iturbide believed that the revolution would take away some of his power so he switched sides to fight for the Mexican revolutionaries.

    Prussia wanted the territories Alsace and Lorraine from France. The fight over these territories sparked feeling of nationalism in the south German states. Prussia won the war and a peace treaty following the war delcared Germany unified.

    In 1898, the U.S. battleship Maine exploded in Havana's harbor. This explosion caused Americans to blame Spain for blowing it up. The Spanish-American war began when Congress declared war against Spain.

    Archduke Franz Ferdinand was visiting Sarajevo. Seven assassins were waiting for him around the city. Assassin Gavrilo Princip ended up killing the Archduke and his wife.

    The Treaty forced German to pay money to the war victims. The treaty aslo gave Germany full responsibility on the war. (blamed Germany) The treaty also made Germany to limit the size of their army.

    This stock market crash caused many investors to be ruined. This crash also led to bank failures because they lent money to these investors. The stock market crash also effected the struggling American Industry.

  • Germany attacks Poland- WWII Begins

    The assault on Poland from Germany marked the start of World War II. Hilter used a new tactic called blitzkrieg or "lighting war". This tactic caused the Polish people to be destroyed quickly.
  • U.S. declares war on Japan

  • Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor

    The Japanese military was lead by Hideki Tojo. Tojo was planning a surprise atttack on a naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack began as the sun rose on December 7, 1941.
  • D-Day

    This event was led by generals George Marshall and Dwight Eisenhower. This attack took place on June 6, 1944. The allied troops stormed the German defenses on the beaches of Normandy.
  • Nuremberg trials are held

    The Nuremberg trials took place during 1945-1949. The military courts of the allied powers tried more than two hundred Nazi and military officials. Because of their roles in the Holocaust and other war crimes, many of them were sentenced to death.
  • U.S. Drops A-Bomb on Hiroshima

    The devestation of this bomb was extreme. 70,000 or more people were killed instantly. The Japanese army did not surrender till after the second A-Bomb was dropped on Nagasaki.

    The National Party came to run the South African government. They established an apartheid policy. This divided people in South Africa into four racial groups, thus making more descrimination in South Africa.

    The Western powers were worried about the spread of communism so they did not want to give Ho Chi Minh and the Communists complete control of Vietnam. This caused Vietnam to seperate into North Vietnam and South Vietnam. Dwight Eisenhower feared that if South Vietnam fell to communism, the other surrounding countries would follow.

    The Persian Gulf War was caused by Iraq attacking Kuwait. Iraq was threatening the oil supplies that Kuwait and nearby Saudi Arabia produced. The negotiations with Iraq failed so it led into the Persian Gulf War.
