    The first successful steam engine was very slow. Many innovations were developed by James Watt. These innovations made the steam engine faster and more efficient.

    Mexico gained freedom and territories from Spain in 1821. They had great disapproval from the northern people. The northerners took the Mexicans language, culture, and religion as insults to their hosts.

    Many rebellions started in 1850. The failure of the Qing dynasty to resist the Western powers made Chinese people to believe that the dynasty had lost the mandate of heaven. Hong Xiuquan wanted a world of peace so he formed the Taiping Rebellion so no one would be poor.

    Strained relations exploded into a rebellion called the Sepoy Mutiny. The introduction of a new type of British rifle caused the rebellions. The Muslim sepoys were offended by the soldier having to bite off the cartiallage because they did not eat pork or meat.

    The United States was neutral in the early years of the war. The attacks of Germany on shipping pushed United States closer to joining the war. The Zimmermann Note pushed the United States to finally join the war.

    The Treaty of Versailles was signed in the French Palace of Versailles and was named after the Palace. The treaty made Germany pay the war's victims. France and Russia's land was returned to them because of this treaty.

    Nervous American leaders banned the sale of oil to Japan, a move that was designed to slow the Japanese war machine. Japan took this as a serious threat to their future plans. The Japanes government continued to hold peace talks with the United States, but where secretly planning for war.

    Allied forces invaded France. The Allied forces broke through German defenses after bloody fighting in the first few weeks. The Germans surrendered Paris and the Allied forces reconquered much of France.

    The Allies issued a demand for Japan's surrender. Japan did not respond so an American plane dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. More than 70,000 people were killed instantly, and thousands of building were destroyed.
