They originally imported Hermann Aegler's Swiss movements to England and placed them in quality cases made by Dennison and others.     Designed by John Browning the M1911 pistol originated in the late 1890s as the result of a search for a suitable self-loading handgun to replace the variety of revolvers then in service. During the end of 1899 and start of 1900, a test of self-loading pistols was conducted. Of the six designs submitted, three were eliminated early on. The final test included firing 6000 rounds from it and when the barrel overheated it would be emersed in water, and then fired without any malfunctions.
