Because this was the first place the settlers landed on towns would soon rise and the need for laws and education was a must thus creating a big dilema of who and how to educate the citizens,
  • Foundation of Harvard College

    Foundation of Harvard College
    Named after the first benefactor John Harvard, soon to be one of the most prestigous schools to be accepted to. After his death, Harvard left his library and half his estate to the school.
  • College of William and Mary

    College of William and Mary
    This college was called "The Perpetual College of Divinity," and taught philosophy, different languages along with other arts and sciences.
  • First Public Library

    First Public Library
    The first public library was established in Charlestown, South Carolina. The people that ran it took very good care of it and even did inventory every november. Letters were sent out to those that helped finance the library thanking them for such a placce.
  • Salem College for Girls

    Salem College for Girls
    Salem college for girls was an academy for girls who could not recieve the same education as the boys. It was run by economically well off single women and taught all kinds of girls, african americans included. Now it is ranked number 13th oldest college overall.
  • Cheyney University

    The first university for african american students. Initially called African Institue and later through some different name changes during the years eventually changed to Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.
  • The Department of Education

    The department of education is created to help gather information about schools and to better each school. Funding for schools comes mainly from this program as well as private funds and other private sources. This program ensures that many people get the education they deserve and they help with all types of people including vocation students, farmers, immigrants and more. This program gives out grants and scholarships to those who need it to attend college.

    Ella Flagg Young named Superintendent
    First american woman educator to achieve an administratvie status in a school system. She studied for quite sometime and worked numerous job including teaching, becoming a principle and even an assistant superintendent.
  • American Federation of Teachers

    American Federation of Teachers
    A union created for teachers and later modified a bit to allow different types of teachers non relevant to school systems.
  • Great Depression

    The infamous great depression of 1929 began with the stock market crash. Unfortunately much public school funding is lost cause schools to cut down on budgets or for other schools to simply close down as we could no longer afford to keep certain schools running.
  • Alvarez vs. The Board of Trustee's

    Alvarez vs. The Board of Trustee's
    In this case, the white people of Lemon Grove did not like that their childrens schools were being "polluted" by mexican children therefor under specific instructions the principle of that school stood at the entrance and turned away mexican children telling them that there was a specified school for them known as " The Barnyard." A feud erupted and eventaully the state ruled in favor of the mexican families which allowed students to attend Lemon Grove.
  • Mendez vs. Westminster and the California Board of Education

    Mendez vs. Westminster and the California Board of Education
    In this case segregation was a huge deal to Westminster school. They claimed they allowed mexican-american children to attend their school only if they had light hair and a non-mexican last name, otherwise they would have to enroll at a different school 10 blocks away. This unjust was soon taken to court and ruled that the equal protection clause had been violated.
  • Project Head Start

    Project Head start was targeted for low income families who could not afford to put their little ones in a private day care. It started as an 8 week course where students would learn to count and their alphabet.
  • Columbine High School

    Columbine High School
    2 high school students attend school armed with weapons and shoot many students some resulting in death and other some injuries. This event sparked up debate as to how secure schools are and what can be done to prevent this type of massacre.
  • No Child Left Behing Act

    No Child Left Behing Act
    This act mandated that all students are to be tested in reading and math beginning in grades from 3-8 and to continue on to high school. This test determines what the student is understanding as well as what can be done to help the student advance. It is said that by 2014 the majority of students should exceed in both subjects.
