Kennedy debates during the 1960 campaign.Aproximately 70 million people sat at home on the evening of Sept. 26 to watch that historic telecast, which was carried by all three networks.

    The wall was built to divide the east and the west communist. The Berlin wall was constructed as a heavily forted barrier that is about 26 miles long. The fall of the Berlin wall which will always be remember as the end of "The Cold War".

    movie actress Marilyn Monroe is found dead in her home in Los Angeles. She was discovered lying nude on her bed, face down, with a telephone in one hand. Empty bottles of pills, prescribed to treat her depression, were littered around the room. After a brief investigation, Los Angeles police concluded that her death was "caused by a self-administered overdose of sedative drugs and that the mode of death is probable suicide."

    Dr King was shot dead in the southern US city of Memphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a march of sanitation workers protesting against low wages and poor working conditions He was shot in the neck as he stood on a hotel balcony and died in hospital soon afterwards. Reverend Jesse Jackson was on the balcony with Dr King when the single shot rang out.

    First to land on the MOON
    Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. The first steps by humans on another planetary body were taken by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on July 20, 1969. The astronauts also returned to Earth the first samples from another planetary body. Apollo 11 achieved its primary mission to perform a manned lunar landing and return the mission safely to Earth.
