  • Dien Bien Phu

    vietnamese forces get onto the French command post at Dien Bien Phu and the French commander orders them to cease fire. The vietnamese end up winning the battle.
  • Ho Chi Minh Trail

    This was a trail that was from North Vietnam to the Vietcong which supplied weapons for them. The trail went through Cambodia, and the north got the approval.
  • U.S. becomes actively involved

    J.F.K. orders that u.s. helps the south Vietnamese fight the Vietcong. The help included new equipment and more than 3,000 military advisors and support personnel.
  • Operation Rangeland

    The soldiers go into the forest and put poison on te crops and other vegitation that the Vietcong might use.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Attack

    South Vietnamese commandos attack two islands in the gulf of Tonkin. The U.S. is 123 miles south and gets orders to attack the north Vietnamese ships.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

    Congress pass a bill that allows president Johnson to do whatever he thinks is nessesary to protect southeast asia.
  • Rolling Thunder Begins

    Johnson offers North Vietnam economic aid in exchange for peace. This offer is rejected, so US raises combat strength in Vietnam. Korea and Australia sign to support US.
  • First major battle of Vietnam War for American Units

    The american military base gets attacked so they attack the Vietcong and end up with a very good win.
  • President Johnson commits over 60,000 troops to Vietnam

    The north Vietnamese try ti cross over the DMZ and get attacked by the south Vietnamese and they hold them back with their heavy artillery.
  • Operation Junction City

    The south Vietnamese swept over north Vietnam and bomb their millitary bases and then captured alot of their equipment and weapons.
  • Khe Sanh attacked by Vietcong

    The Vietcong attack a marine base called Khe Sanh and kill 18 Marines instantly and 40 are wounded. The attack continues for 2 days.
  • Tet offensive begins

    The vietcong came wave after wave into big cities trying to kill as much people as possible. It appears that the vietcong actually lost 37,000 people. U.S. lost only 2,500.
  • My Lai massacre

    U.S. Charlie Company kills about 200 civilians. One member of thr divition is found guilty for the war crimes.
  • Nixion takes office

    Richard Nixion tkes office and says that he will make peace and withdrawl half a million troops from vietnam allowing south Veitnam to survive.

    President Nixion allows the bombing of North Vietnam and cambodia. Over four years half a million tons of bombs will be dropped.
