    The invention of the telegraph was the very first step to creating a way of communicating through signals. This opened many doors to improvement of the way signals were transfered through difffernt devices.

    Carl F.Gauss and Ernst H. Weber built the first device that could transmit signals from one decvice to the next, known as the electro-motograph telegraph. This telegraoh was an upgrade to the previous device, which opened up the door to communication through mobile telephones.

    The first translantic cable was installed but it failed after 28 days in 1858. Eight years later the second transatlantic cable was installed. It was a success! Telephone communication was now available between two countries. This opened up world possibilites in itself. We could now communicate quicker and could recieve information of war or trade faster.

    Alexander Invents the Telephone Idea
    Two inventors, Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray both came up with inventions for the telephone. Bell bet him to the punch though, and got it patened before Gray could; making Alexander the inventor of the telephone.

    With the idea that one wire could tranfer comunication from multipule people at one time and the perfection of sound through this wire, it was put into action. This invention would change the way people comunicated for centuries to come. They would not longer have to use the code the telegraph required.

    The workable exchange comes on line which enables calls to be made to any number of subscribers rather than requiring direct lines. This broadens the area where communication is concered.

    People were now given phone numbers as a way to talk to that specific person. This has effected us up to this day. Phone numbers are still used and now we even have area codes attached.
  • Dialing System

    The first automatic dial system was patented by a Kansas City resident. Switchboard operators were no longer necessary to make a telephone call. This enhanced the way calls were made and led to the 'upgrade' of this particular system.
  • First Wireless Phone

    Oliver Lodge succeed in wireless communication over a distance of 150 yards. This marked the beginnings of cell phone technology. The impact during this time was huge, making a cell phone the next big thing.
  • First Payphone

    The first payhphone was installed in Hartford, Connecticut. This idea spread like wildfire, with new instalations being prepared all thoughout the country.
  • Spread of AT&T

    American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) took control of the Western Union Telegraph Company. This is the beginning of what would be the largest telephone company in the US until the 1980's. AT&T opened the idea for different companies to start their own buisness and took ahold of this industry creating new jobs.
  • US is Connected!

    Bell System completed the U.S. transcontinental telephone line; everyone in the US was now connected to each other. Once this occured this industry was really roaring and with the uproar of the costumers it really boomed!
  • Clearer and Faster Lines

    The Bell System telephones were in service and now occupied over ten million lines. With this connection, Edwin H. Armstrong invents the superheterodyne receiver circuit which allows calls to be clearer and faster. This speed up the industry during this time.
  • No More Underwater Cables

    Transatlantic service from New York to London became functional by radio waves which meant that underwater cables were no longer needed. This event has led to wireless phones and communication throughout the world still used today.

    "Merry Christmas"
    The first commercial SMS message was sent over the Vodafone GSM network in the United Kingdom from Neil Papworth, who was using a personal computer. The message was sent to Richard Jarvis of Vodafone, using an Orbitel 901 handset. The text message was "Merry Christmas". The first SMS typed on a GSM phone was sent by Riku Pihkonen, an engineer student at Nokia, in 1993. Text messaging has made communication quicker, but has also distanced people. It is the main form of communication.

    Olympus manufactured a cell phone that had a camera installed. You could now take pictures from your phone of anything. This opened up journalists oppurtunities and a new way of communication. To this day many people send pictures through their phones and no longer need a digital camera to capture the moment.

    The first full internet service on a mobile phone was introduced by NTT DoCoMo in Japan. Now the world was literally at your hands. People to this day depend on the information avaliable from your phone. It has made finding information quicker and has changed the way we live.
  • Verizon in Buisness

    Verizon went into buisness with the merge of Bell's Atlantic and GTE. They are now one of the leading wireless companies and are competetors of AT&T. Many people have phones from them.

    This picture shows how the technology has grown and the impact it has on today. We now have internet access and texting avaliable. Phones are used in our everyday lives and they are somewhat a tool of survival.
