The power plant officials were not going to report the accident, however, on the 28th Swedish monitering stations noticed the raised radiation levels and wanted an explanation. -

Chernobyl nuclear power plant was shut down due to the dangers it posed. After the accident in 1986 the radiation contaminated the forests surounding the compound. Many lifestock were born deformed.
