Peter Minuit joined the Dutch West India Company. He was sent to the New Netherland to look for tradeable goods in 1625. A year later he returned back to New Sweden. In 1638 he went back to New Netherland. On the way back from New Sweden in 1638n he was killed while onboard a ship during a hurricane.

When New Sweden got a new governer, he made the Dutch mad. He set up three forts. The Dutch acted quickly and sent 300 soldiers and captured 2 of the forts. Outnumbered, Sweden surrendered and gave their loyalty to the Dutch.

The Dutch became enemies with the English because they controlled the Delaware and Hudson River Valleys. The English claimed the land and sailed to New Amsterdam with a lot of people. The Dutch were going to fight back but they didn't want anyone killed. The Dutch surrendered. New Amsterdam is now known as New York.

William Penn was the son of Sir Penn. Sir Penn has loaned the King a lot of money and after the death of Sir Penn, the King did not have enough money to repay the Penn family. So instead the King gave William a piece of American land. Penn was in charge of making the government and writing the laws of this land. Penn named his piece of land Pennsylvania. William also bought some Indian land.

William Penn named the land he recieved from the King Pennsylvania. Penn was worried about how the Native Americans and Quakers would get along. When Penn arrived in Pennsylvania he met with the Indian leaders. When they met Penn was unarmed to show them that he was peaceful. Penn and the Indians exchanged gifts with one another and made an agreement known today as the Great Treaty. Penn even insisted on paying the Indians for their land even thought the King had already given it to him.

After the death of William Penn land problems started occuring. The Indians realised that they were being cheated out of their land. To settle the problems they agreed that they could have as much land as they could walk in a day and a half. The Delaware Indians had lost thousands of acres of land with this deal.

Land in weter Pennsylvania was being claimed by several different groups. It was claimed by the English, Virginia, Ohio and the French.The Quakers would not take up arms to stop the French so they told the French to leave. Then the battle began. George Washington defeated the French, but they came back with a bigger force. They were outnumbered and forced to surrender on July 4.

A Ottawa Chief named Pontiac was upset and thought that the Great Spirit was punishing him and his people for giving up their land and thier native ways. He got together several different tribes and they raided settlers' homes, killed settlers' and burned many crops and farms. He also destroyed several British forts. Then the Battle of Bushy Run began. Colonel Bouquet brought well trained soldiers to stop them. They were ambushed by the Indians, but Bouquet used smart stradegies and won.

The colonists were upset about the taxation issues and decided to send delegats to meet and discuss what actions should be take to fox the problems. They debated but decided to tell Great Britian the American point of view. They tried one more petition and labled it "Declaration of Rights and Grievances" The King ignored them and even made their polices stricter for the Americans. They fought battles with Britian in Lexington and Concord.

Pennsylvania was one of the first states to write a new constitution. In 1776 Ben Franklin, and Robert Morris called for a constitional convention. This document was different because it placed the power of the goverment in the hands of the commen citizens. They made sure everyone had equal representaton and even had a Declaration of Rights. They also set up new voting rights.

When the Continental Army was at it's lowest point in War, Washington took his force and made a winter camp at Valley forge. British could have easily beat the Americans but decided to wait. They formed an alliance with the French and started training. Even though they had a rough winter, they survived. Finally Washington had an army that was as good as the British army.

Pennsylvanias rives and streams were a good way to transport goods and people, but they needed boats that could go faster against the current. William Henry had been working on a boat that could go both up and down stream but it didn't work. Then John Fitch tried to make Williams idea work. His both worked, but not used by the public. He then set up a steamboat line.

To keep up with the rival cities, Pennsylvania started builing better roads to move people and goods better. The Lancaster Turnpike Company made a better road from Philidelphia to Lancaster. It was a great sucess and cut travel time down dramatically. To gain back some of their money they spent building the road they charged people traveling on it every 10 miles.
