  • Plankalkul

Plankalkul was developed by Konrad Zuse in 1948. Plankalkul translates to "formal system for planning". This programming languages primary purpose is to support all engineering purposes, and it was the first high-level programming language to be designed for a computer.
  • FORTRAN

FORTRAN was developed by John Backus and IDM in 1957. Fortran is derived from formula translation. The primary purpose of this programming language is to support scientific and engineering applications.
  • MATH-MATIC

MATH-MATIC was developed by Remington Rand in 1957. It is the marketing name for Algebraic Translator 3. The primary purpose of MATH-MATIC is to provide algebraic-style expressions.
  • Lisp

Lisp was developed by Steve Russell, Timothy P. Hart, and Mike Levin in 1958. It does not stand for anything. The primary purpose of Lisp is to be a practical mathematical notation for computer programs.
  • COBOL

COBOL was developed by CODASYL, ANSI, and ISO in 1959. COBOL stands for "common business-oriented language." The primary purpose of this programming language is for business use.
  • RPG

RPG was developed by IBM in 1959. RPG stands for Report Program Generator. The primary purpose of this programming language was to be a high-level programming language for all business applications. But it has developed into a modern programming language.
  • BASIC

BASIC was first developed by John G. Kemeny and Thomas E. Kurtz in 1964. The letters in BASIC stand for Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. The primary purpose of this programming language was to enable students to use computers in fields other than science and math.
  • LOGO

LOGO was developed by Bolt, Beranek, and Newman in 1967. LOGO is not an acronym, but is derived from the Greek word for word or thought. The primary purpose of LOGO is to teach programming concepts related to the ones used by Lisp.
  • B

B was developed by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie. It was first developed in 1969. There is no one answer to what the B stands for, but many believed is was derived from BCPL or from Bon(a earlier programming language). The primary purpose of this programming language is to support recursive, non-numeric, machine-independent applications(system and language software).
  • PASCAL

PASCAL was developed by Niklaus Wirth in 1970. It was named in honor of Blaise Pascal. The primary purpose of PASCAL is to encourage good programming practices.
  • C

C was developed by Dennis Ritchie and Bell Labs in 1972. The C does not stand for anything, it means the C programming language. The primary purpose of this programming language was to support structured programming and other programs related to that, and it was effective at this because C is capable of efficiently reading machine instructions.
  • ML

ML was developed by Robin Milner and his associates at the University of Edinburgh in 1973. It stands for Meta Language. The primary purpose of ML is to ensure type safety and prevent runtime errors.
  • SQL

SQL was developed by ISO/IEC and was designed by Donald D. Chamberlin and Raymond F. Boyce in 1974. It stands for Structured Query Language. The primary purpose of this programming language is to manage data in RDBMS and RDSMS.
  • ADA

ADA was first developed by a team led by Jean Ichbiah in 1980. The purpose of the program was to provide support to embedded and real-time systems, but later on was expanded to support for systems, numerical, financial, and object-oriented among others. ADA was named after Ada Lovelace, who was credited as the first computer programmer.
  • C++

C++ was developed by Bjarne Stroustrup in 1985. The C++ does not stand for anything(but it can also be said "see plus plus"). The primary purpose of this programming language was to support low-level memory manipulation because of its object-oriented programming features.
  • Python

Python was developed by the Python software foundation and was designed by Guido van Rossum in 1990. The primary purpose of this programming is to emphasize code readability and supports multiple programming paradigms.
  • Visual Basic

Visual Basic was developed by Microsoft in 1991. It was derived from BASIC. The primary purpose of this programming language is to be a COM programming that would be relatively easy to learn and use.
  • Delphi(IDE)

Delphi was developed by Embarcadero Technologies in 1995. Another name for Delphi is IDE("integrated development environment"). The primary purpose of this programming language is to support rapid application development technology.
  • Java

Java was developed by Sun Microsystems in 1995. Java does not stand for anything. The primary purpose of Java was to have code that could run on all platforms that support Java programming.
  • JavaScript

JavaScript was developed by Netscape communications corporation in 1995. JavaScript Does not stand for anything. The primary purpose of JavaScript is to enable interactive webpages.
  • PHP

PHP was developed by PHP design team and Zend technologies in 1995. It stands for Hypertext Preprocessor. The primary purpose of PHP is to be embedded into HTML or be used in web template systems.
